Only six days have passed since the end of August, but that’s been enough time for Sony to crunch the numbers and figure out which games topped the charts on the PlayStation Store last month. Dozens of games managed to attract a noteworthy amount of downloads across a number of categories in the digital storefront throughout the month. But only one game can bear the honor of being the overall top-selling PS4 game of August 2019, and that game is Madden NFL 20.
EA’s football series has long drawn a sizable audience of fans wanting to get their sports fix in the comfort of their own homes, and the latest entry has succeeded in keeping the trend going. This probably has nothing to do with the hilarious glitch that lets players carry a ball with their helmet, but it certainly didn't hurt either.
In more specific categories, other PS4 titles were able to get their time in the spotlight. Popular sword-based rhythm game Beat Saber took top honors among virtual reality games. And in news that should surprise no one, Fortnite not only got the most downloads among free-to-play games but also saw the most DLC downloaded for any single game as well.

Now that September is underway, the race is on to see which of this month’s new releases will prove to be most successful. EA’s next sports game, FIFA 20, could very well take the top spot like Madden NFL 20 did when it comes out at the end of the month, but it’ll be going up against some heavy-hitters like Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, NBA 2K20, and Borderlands 3, to name a few.
