Playstation is offering Final Fantasy XIV Online Starter Edition to all PS4 users for free until May 26. Players can download the game through the PlayStation Store.

The 14th installment of the popular RPG series, Final Fantasy XIV Online is only the second MMORPG in the line up. The Starter Edition typically costs $20 to purchase, and the online version requires a paid monthly subscription in order to play. Even though the “Free Play” Campaign ended on May 17, Square Enix is allowing gamers another chance to start their own Final Fantasy XIV adventures.

Final Fantasy XIV Online Starter Edition comes with an online 30 day free trial, so players initially don’t have to pay to play the game with friends. This package includes Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, which is the base game that many players can enjoy without a subscription to PlayStationPlus. According to Square Enix, the Starter Edition is a great way for new players to try the game and get a taste of adventure in Eorzea. Currently, there have been no announcements to expand this offer to the PC version of the game, but at least for now, it only applies to the PS4.

This offer is a great way to get into the popular Final Fantasy game while the coronavirus has driven many to stay inside. While this is a wonderful chance to play the game, the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn version that comes with the Starter Edition lacks the expansions Stormblood, Heavensward, and Shadowbringers which fans claim immensely improves the player experience of the game. The Starter Edition also only allows for players to get to level 50 and does not let the player’s in-game level surpass that point.

While some may say that the content that’s being left out makes this opportunity not worth the download, this is still an event worth taking advantage of if you have been thinking about getting into Final Fantasy XIV. A new player has the chance to explore the game to dip their foot in the water and decide whether they want to go farther and experience the DLCs the game also has to offer.
