Summary
- PlayStation has upgraded the DualSense PC firmware updater app, rebranding it to "PlayStation Accessories" and improving the interface and user experience.
- The overhaul also brings support for custom DualSense Edge profiles on PC, a feature formerly available only on PS5 consoles.
PlayStation has made significant changes to the DualSense firmware updater app for PC, such as a revamped interface and feature-complete support for the DualSense Edge controller. Over two years have elapsed since the DualSense PC updater app was released, so the overhaul is a welcome move from PlayStation.
Thanks to its novel features like haptic feedback, gyro aiming, and adaptive triggers, the DualSense is considered one of the best controllers available today. The controller initially worked only with a PS5, but PlayStation extended the DualSense's functionality to PC in 2022 with the firmware updater app. It allows PC users to effortlessly connect their DualSense controllers, utilize the features in supported games, and update the firmware when required. 2023 saw the launch of the DualSense Edge, a specialized version of the standard controller with additional features like replaceable stick modules, back buttons, and more.
New PS5 Controller Has Sold Out
The latest DualSense controller for the PlayStation 5 has sold out across many nationwide retailers within hours of going up for pre-order.
While most of the DualSense Edge's feature set has been compatible with PC since day one, only PS5 users have had the ability to create, edit, and switch custom controller profiles so far. Now, though, PlayStation's overhaul of the DualSense firmware updater app will finally allow PC users to create and play around with custom DualSense Edge profiles as well. Moreover, the app has been rebranded to "PlayStation Accessories" and promises a substantially improved design and user experience, seemingly in a bid to convince more PC players to use DualSense controllers with their rigs.
Regardless of the motive, it's encouraging to see PlayStation enable the DualSense Edge's full feature set for PC users to enjoy. The ability to create, edit, and switch controller profiles can be very useful, especially for players who like to dive into a variety of competitive multiplayer games. In particular, the DualSense Edge's features have received acclaim from Overwatch 2 players on PS5, so PC players might hopefully see some utility in the enthusiast-grade controller as well.
For all its upsides, though, the significantly smaller battery in the DualSense Edge makes battery life one of the biggest drawbacks of the controller. Prospective buyers should therefore keep in mind that they may have to use the DualSense Edge wired at all times. Meager battery life aside, the DualSense Edge has a lot to offer for PC enthusiasts, even more so now that its entire suite of features is available on the platform.
