Last week, Sony revealed the first official details about PlayStation 5 and players the world over are, no doubt, buzzing with excitement. That said, while information on PlayStation 5 specs and features is certainly enough to fuel the hype behind the forthcoming console, many fans may wish to have one question answered in particular: What will the Playstation 5 games be?
Of course, addressing this question currently requires speculation, as nothing has been officially announced. That said, a number of rumors, teases, and somewhat oblique statements, coupled with the idea that the PS5 is likely to release in 2020, help paint a picture of what the console's early game lineup may look like.
To note, this list only includes titles that are currently rumored as in development. As such, games that are very likely to receive a sequel, but there is not a current rumor of one, are not included.
16 Battlefield: Bad Company 3
The rumor that DICE is developing Battlefield: Bad Company 3 has been circulating for years, but it has never materialized. Now, a Pastebin post from last December, which has been circulating online recently, has reignited the conversation.
This post, which is said to be written by a third-party developer working on a PS5 title, claims that Battlefield: Bad Company 3 will indeed be a launch title for Sony's forthcoming console. While it is very possible that this will not come to pass, a Battlefield title for PS5 is almost a certainty.
15 Cyberpunk 2077
Since the announcement of CD Projekt Red's highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077, fans have been continually speculating about when the RPG will be released. This speculation has been fueled by frequent leaks that have purported to reveal the game's release date, and the most recent of these leaks has suggested the game will arrive in November 2019.
That said, there has been indication that Cyberpunk 2077 may ultimately be a cross-gen release. This was most specifically stated in a recent CD Projekt Red financial report, where Board of Directors member Adam Kiciński said that the company would like to "launch Cyberpunk for another generation" if possible.
14 Death Stranding
The Death Stranding release date has been a point of frequent discussion, and there has certainly been speculation that the game will ultimately find a home on PlayStation 5. That said, recent news has suggested that the game may, in fact, end up as a cross-gen release.
This idea comes from a recent conversation between Wired and Mark Cerny, the PS5 lead system architect. In this discussion, it was indicated that the game would still release for PS4, but a pregnant pause and smile from Cerny have some fans thinking that Death Stranding will arrive on Sony's forthcoming console as well.
13 Destiny 3
While some fans might argue that Destiny 2 has just hit its stride, the release of a sequel to Bungie's popular looter shooter seems inevitable. While there has been no official announcement of the development of this sequel, a rumor has been circulating that suggests that Destiny 3 will release in 2020 as a PS5 launch title.
This rumor solidified with a recent Reddit post from user AnonTheNine, a community member known for leaking details about the Destiny franchise. It certainly remains to be seen if this leak will prove accurate, but launching Destiny 3 alongside the PlayStation 5 would very likely guarantee that quite a number of consoles would be sold upon release.
12 The Elder Scrolls 6
Without question, the next entry in Bethesda's acclaimed The Elder Scrolls series is sure to be at the top of many players' most wanted lists. However, The Elder Scrolls 6 is essentially confirmed to be a PlayStation 5 release, and it is likely a ways off.
This assumption can fairly safely be made due to the announcement that Starfield will be released prior to The Elder Scrolls 6. Indeed, Bethesda's Todd Howard has confirmed that Starfield is a "next-generation" game, and The Elder Scrolls 6 will thus be one as well. Furthermore, it has been confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 6 will not be shown at E3 2019, giving additional credence to the idea that it is a long time coming.
11 Ghost of Tsushima
A stunning Ghost of Tsushima trailer was shown during E3 2018, and it certainly seemed to pique the interest of many fans. While this samurai game was initially announced as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, new details suggest that the game's release may be further off than expected.
Specifically, it has been discovered that the developers behind Ghost of Tsushima are hiring a narrative writer, ostensibly to fill out the game's story. This would suggest that development is still very much ongoing, which could potentially turn Ghost of Tsushima into a PlayStation 5 release, or, perhaps, a cross-gen title.
10 God of War 2
It is essentially a forgone conclusion that the highly acclaimed God of War from 2018 will receive a sequel, and this has been indicated recently in several forms. The first of these suggestions came from Kotaku's Jason Schreier, who stated on Reddit that God of War 2 is in the works. Following this, a tease in a recent PlayStation 4 theme may also be a reference to an upcoming sequel.
Of course, without any official word on God of War 2, it seems very unlikely that it will release just a year after its predecessor on PlayStation 4. As such, a PlayStation 5 release appears to be the most likely fate for this much anticipated followup.
9 Grand Theft Auto 6
Rumors focused around Grand Theft Auto 6 have been cropping up for years now, and one in particular has been getting some attention over the past couple of weeks. As with the Battlefield: Bad Company 3 rumor this one comes via a Pastebin post from last December.
In this post, it is indicated that Grand Theft Auto 6 will release in 2020 as a PlayStation 5 launch title. However, the rumor surrounding this game extends even further, and it is suggested that Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch as a timed PS5 exclusive.
8 Horizon Zero Dawn 2
As with God of War, the development of a sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn seems like a no brainer. Additionally, the idea of an inevitable release of Horizon Zero Dawn 2 was recently given further legs when voice actor Janina Gavinkar indicated that players were "gonna die" when they saw the sequel.
While again it seems safe to assume that the game is on track for a next-gen release, due to the complete lack of details about the title, there is also a rumor stating as much. This once again comes from the aforementioned December Pastebin post, and it indicates that Horizon Zero Dawn 2 is coming to PS5 in 2021.
7 The Last of Us 2
Just like Cyberpunk 2077, there have been countless leaks that purport to confirm the release date for The Last of Us 2 on PS4. Moreover, a recent development update stated that the game is one step closer to completion, as the final scene has reportedly been shot.
That said, there is a rumor circulating that suggests that The Last of Us 2 will be a launch title for PS5. Specifically, this rumor indicates that this will be a remaster of the title, which may mean The Last of Us 2 will be yet another cross-gen release.
