During the July 2025 Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase, Nintendo showcased several upcoming games coming to Nintendo Switch and other gaming platforms, such as Cronos: The New Dawn, Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac, and Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted. The latest entry in the 16-year-old Plants vs. Zombies franchise, Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted will have players young and old journey back to PVZ’s simpler PC and mobile tower defense days: Replanted is an HD remaster of 2009’s original Plants vs. Zombies. On top of featuring remastered classics of the 2009 original, Replanted will also feature new local co-op and PvP modes as well as brand-new minigames like Cloudy Day. While Replanted will surely be exciting for veteran PVZ fans, it may just be getting the ball rolling.

Plants vs. Zombies is Making a Comeback With a New Feature

Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted signals the much-awaited comeback and reboot of the original game, releasing soon with a new feature.

Potential Future Remasters of Other Classic Mobile Games Like Plants Vs. Zombies Replanted

While Plants vs. Zombies was originally released on Windows and Mac OS X PCs, it’s arguably most famous for its role in boosting the early mobile gaming market when it first debuted on the original generation of iPhones and iPads in early 2010. In fact, the iOS release of Plants vs. Zombies sold over 300,000 copies in just nine days following its launch, generating over $1 million in gross sales. By 2016, the original Plants vs. Zombies app on IOS had sold nine million copies. The early 2010s was a momentous period for Plants vs. Zombies and its developer, PopCap Games; the tower defense game was quickly ported to numerous platforms such as the Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3, and Android.

Plants vs. Zombies wasn’t the only stand-out mobile and PC title released towards the end of the 2000s, however. Before PVZ released, PopCap Games launched the casual puzzle game Peggle in 2007 for Windows and Mac OS X PCs before later porting Peggle to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and IOS. Peggle went on to receive similar critical and financial acclaim as PVZ and went on to receive sequels with 2008’s Peggle Nights and 2013’s Peggle 2. If Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted sells well and receives positive reviews, Electronic Arts should consider developing a remaster of Peggle, potentially bundling in remasters of Peggle Nights and Peggle 2, as Peggle 2 was only released on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

An Angry Birds Trilogy Remaster Would Be a Logical Next Step

PopCap Games’ Plants vs. Zombies is often regarded as one of the best classic mobile games of all time, but it typically falls behind another great 2009 mobile game, Rovio Entertainment’s Angry Birds. This physics-based casual puzzle game is arguably responsible for the initial success of mobile gaming as Angry Birds was downloaded 18 million times by September 2010 and later featured 200 million monthly active players by May 2012.

Since then, Angry Birds has become a global multimedia phenomenon, but not all of its original titles are easily accessible today. To bring the series to modern audiences, Rovio should consider remastering the original Angry Birds Trilogy, alongside possibly Angry Birds Friends, Angry Birds Space, and Bad Piggies, similar to Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted.

Rovio Entertainment did release a remake of 2009’s Angry Birds in 2022 called Rovio Classics: Angry Birds but it was later renamed as Red's First Flight in 2023.

Plants vs. Zombies Can Turn to Further Remasters

If Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted does well on Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, and PC platforms, it could potentially motivate EA to revisit other classic Plants vs. Zombie games. For example, PopCap Games and EA could potentially remaster 2014’s multiplayer third-person shooter Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare. Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare was one of the earliest popular multiplayer titles during the eighth console generation, especially on Xbox One and PS4, with eight million players trying out the game by 2015. Garden Warfare’s servers are still currently online, though it has lost most of its playerbase in the decade since its launch.

Remastering Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare after Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted could create a wave of nostalgia for players who grew up with both mobile and console games. Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 and its sequel Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville still have active multiplayer servers as well, but the first Garden Warfare still has an original appeal to it that can attract both veteran and new players. EA and PopCap could potentially bundle both Garden Warfare games into a remaster package as Garden Warfare 2 will turn 10 years old in February 2026. Either way, Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted and other potential PVZ remasters could help revitalize the Plants vs. Zombies franchise and offer a new perspective on mobile gaming history.
