Most of these paranormal tools are based on those used by actual ghost hunters, which makes the experience feel all the more immersive and fascinating.

One particular tool in Phasmophobia that you'll find yourself making good use of is the Sound Recorder. This newer piece of equipment can be used for collecting some of the most eerie pieces of evidence in your investigation, so here's how it works.

How to Unlock Sound Recorder in Phasmophobia

The Sound Recorder is a type of equipment added as part of Phasmophobia's landmark Chronicle (v0.13) update. Like most other equipment in the game, it's available in three tiers of quality, and you first need to reach the respective level to unlock each tier.

The Sound Recorder can be found under the Optional Equipment section of the Shop menu. Remember that you need to be in the main lobby to access this menu. While you can unlock the first tier of the Sound Recorder for free early on, the two subsequent tier upgrades each have their own upgrade price, so make sure you have enough funds on hand to unlock them.

Once you've completed the upgrade for all three tiers, those upgrades will be permanent for your character. However, if you choose to Prestige upon reaching Level 100, all of your equipment upgrades will fully reset, and you'll have to unlock and purchase them all again. This happens every time you prestige, so keep that in mind.

How to Use the Sound Recorder in Phasmophobia

While it may seem intimidating at first, the Sound Recorder is thankfully simple and easy to use. Just remember that you need to keep it in your hand to use it (similar to the EMF Reader or Temperature Gauge). This tool is the key to gathering Sound-related evidence for the Media tab in your journal, and you need up to three recordings to fill the 'Sounds' section.

While starting your investigation at your chosen location, grab the Sound Recorder from the equipment wall in the van. You can have a maximum of two Sound Recorders per investigation, and they're located just above the Incense rack on the left side. The sooner you go for your sound recordings, the better, since carrying any electronic equipment during ghost-hunting activity is dangerous.

Your goal is first to find the ghost's favorite room/area, where its activity is prominent. Make sure to turn the recorder on so that it's ready to detect anything of value. As the ghost becomes more active, you'll notice the gauge on the recorder rise when paranormal sounds are being detected. If you're using the Tier 3 version of the Sound Recorder (as seen above), use the directional compass at the bottom right corner of its screen to find noise's approximate location.

When the gauge is at least 75% full, press and hold the appropriate 'interact' button (e.g., right-click the mouse on the PC version) to start recording. If you're successful, the recording will be indicated in the Media tab of your journal, in the 'Sounds' section. The following types of sounds are confirmed to qualify toward 'Sounds' Media evidence:

Paranormal Sounds (e.g., Laughing, Whispering)
Sounds made by the ghost while it hunts
Singing-type ghost events
Spirit Box evidence (this won't work for every ghost, so make sure to have alternatives!)

Note that Media evidence is no longer graded by star ratings (1-3 stars). As of the Chronicle (v0.13) update, collected Media, including sound recordings, photos, and video footage clips, are all labeled as either 'Unique' or a 'Duplicate.' In other words, to get maximum points (and a Perfect Investigation), all of your Media must qualify as 'Unique.' You can't have more than one of the same type of sound recording (as seen above), or the same type of photo. (This means no more Salt photo spamming.)
