If players have plenty of money from successfully completing contracts on harder difficulties and engaging in optional objectives, then they can likely afford to purchase every upgrade when they reach the required level. However, for those with a limited budget, it's best to know which Equipment upgrades to get first in Phasmophobia, as some Tier 2 items are far superior, while other Tier 1 items are surprisingly good without an upgrade.

1 Flashlight Tier 2

The first upgrade players gain access to is the Tier 2 Flashlight, which they will want to purchase immediately if they can afford the cost. The Flashlight is an item that players will want to carry around most of the time, and even when it is not currently being used, its light can still be switched on.

With medium-intensity light, players will be able to see better, and more importantly, at longer distances. It's hard to go back to a lower-level torch after upgrading. Spare Flashlights can also be placed on the ground to light corridors or point toward a hiding spot.

The Tier 2 EMF Reader is one of the best upgrades in Phasmophobia as it features an audio indicator that flares up when there is ghost activity. With bright-colored lights, it is also much easier to read, especially when in the dark or running. If the red light turns on, that means there is EMF Level 5 evidence.

It's hard to state how much of an improvement this is over the Tier 1 equivalent, which has a needle going up and down. The Tier 2 Spirit Box makes things easier by increasing the range by 1m and also by improving the response rate. Combined, these two factors mean that if there is a nearby ghost who gives Spirit Box evidence, they will be more likely to respond. The Tier 2 D.O.T.S. Projector is completely different from its predecessor, as instead of being held like a torch, it is placed on hard surfaces such as walls. By doing so, after finding the Ghost Room, players will cover an entire wall or section of a room with the D.O.T.S., giving players a better chance to find D.O.T.S evidence if the ghost walks through it.

This is particularly great if players set up a camera on a tripod, allowing them to watch for D.O.T.S. From the safety of the van. Despite an upgrade to Tier 2 being recommended, players will want to keep one Tier 1 D.O.T.S. Projector in their loadout.
