While Persona 5 Royal already sports some slick fashion, some players yearn for more extensive customization. On the second or third playthrough, elements like costumes and higher difficulties can help the run feel fresh and exciting. The costumes in Persona 5 Royal range from lighthearted Christmas outfits to school uniforms from previous Persona games.
Players can equip separate costumes for each character in their team, although they will only appear in the Metaverse. This can either result in a color-coordinated team of master Phantom Thieves, or four people dressing up to attend different costume parties. Costumes are displayed while in combat, but they do not show up in story cutscenes. Equipping costumes does not change a character's offensive or defensive stats, as they are purely cosmetic.
How to Equip Costumes in Persona 5 Royal
In order to equip costumes, players should open the "Equip" menu, then select the character they would like to dress. Next, players should press the "Outfit" option to view all costumes they currently own. Once a costume is chosen, players should close all menus and return to gameplay. This process is most effective when characters are in the Metaverse, as their outfits can be immediately viewed. If players switch costumes in the normal world, they must wait until they enter Mementos or a Palace to preview these outfits.
Costumes can not be changed mid-battle, but they can be switched at any time while exploring the Metaverse. These costumes include outfits such as seasonal school uniforms, casual clothing, butler suits, and maid dresses. There are even full matching sets like the Shadow Ops uniforms that help the Phantom Thieves appear professional.
How to Unlock Costumes in Persona 5 Royal
For PC and Xbox players, all of Persona 5 Royal's past DLC comes bundled with the game automatically. However, PS4 players must manually claim the DLC bundle on the PlayStation Store, at no cost to them. Once the DLC has been acquired, players must travel to Joker's room in Café Leblanc. Next to the TV, there is a large cardboard box on a shelf. Players must walk up to this box and interact with it, which triggers a piece of dialogue from Morgana.
After this dialogue is finished, pop-up windows for each DLC item will appear, notifying the player that they have been claimed. By interacting with this cardboard box, players also receive DLC supplies, Personas, and money, so they should be aware of this fact if they are pursuing a truly vanilla run of Persona 5 Royal.
Persona 5 Royal is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
