Summary

  • Persona 5: The Phantom X is coming to Steam, but only the Japanese release.
  • Fans have demanded a global release, and the Steam version of the mobile title could be a good indication that one will eventually happen.
  • Crossovers with other Persona games are planned, and a console release is coming, so there is a lot to look forward to for P5X fans.

Atlus has announced that mobile game Persona 5: The Phantom X is coming to Steam, albeit only for Japanese fans. Persona 5: The Phantom X is a mobile and PC spin-off of the mainline game, and sees players embody the role of a high-school boy, becoming the Phantom Thief codenamed Wonder. Unlike the mainline Persona titles, which are long-form RPGs, The Phantom X is similar to gacha games like Genshin Impact and Tower of Fantasy. Despite the genre shift, it carries a lot of the same spirit of Persona 5, as players get to pull for Phantom Idols and their Persona II, which are essentially new Phantom Thieves and Personas they use as party members.

Persona 5: The Phantom X has been primarily marketed as a game exclusively for the Chinese market, as mainland China never got the original Persona 5. As such, P5X is meant to be its own release for the region. That being said, a lot of fans have been clamoring for an international release of Persona 5: The Phantom X, with this demand even surprising the developers themselves. While Persona 5: The Phantom X has already been available to play on PC and mobile devices in China and other parts of Asia, the game is finally coming to Steam, albeit only its Japanese client.

This announcement was posted on the official Persona 5: The Phantom X Japanese Twitter account, with this account being created before the Tokyo Game Show 2024 event. P5X was also playable on the show floor alongside other games like Metaphor: ReFantazio. The official Twitter announced that pre-registration for P5X's closed beta has been opened, with it releasing on iOS, Android, and PC. The Japanese client of P5X will be available on Google Play Games and Steam.

Persona 5: The Phantom X Steam Release is Japan-Only, But It's Closer to Global

While this client is Japanese-only, fans following Persona 5: The Phantom X were glad they wouldn't need to install a third-party client in order to play and could just do it through Steam. Moreover, since Atlus did confirm that there were plans for an international release of P5X at an offline event back in July, any kind of Steam release for the game is a good sign.

Atlus also confirmed that Persona 5: The Phantom X will be coming to consoles after the game's international release. P5X is also slated to get crossovers with other Persona games, with Persona 5 Royal, Persona 3 Reload, and Persona 4 Golden in the pipeline. Atlus has already decided on an outline for the ending of P5X as well, and it is currently being refined. In the meantime, P5X is currently focusing on its crossovers with the original Persona 5, as well as adding more content and Phantom Idol characters for players to pull.
