Kanji is the fifth member of the Investigation Team in Persona 4 Golden, which means he's also a Social Link character. Since he can fight alongside the protagonist, Kanji will unlock various Skills exclusive to the Social Link for his Persona. At higher Ranks, he'll learn abilities to Endure powerful attacks and even take a hit for the protagonist in battle.

To get Kanji, Persona 4 Golden players will need to have completed the Steamy Bathhouse dungeon. Once Kanji officially joins the team, players will hear rumors about someone bullying another student. Players can confront Kanji as early as June 9th to initiate the Social Link.

Where to Find Kanji

Kanji is the Emperor Social Link, meaning players should bring a Persona of the Emperor Arcana before they visit him. Unlike Yukiko, Chie, and Yosuke, Kanji's Rank 1 is not part of the story. The protagonist will need to find Kanji in the Practice Building, 1F as early as June 9th to start the Social Link.

From this point on, Kanji can be found in the Practice Building, 1F on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. On holidays and Sundays, he'll be standing outside Tatsumi Textiles in the Shopping District (North). Like every other party member, Kanji is unavailable when it rains or during exams week.

Since Kanji represents the Emperor Arcana, players should have at least one of the following Persona in their lineup:

  • Barong
  • King Frost
  • Oberon
  • Odin
  • Oukuninushi
  • Pabilsag
  • Setanta
  • Thoth

Having a matching Persona will increase the points earned from Social Links by one. At this point in P4G, players should have registered (at least) Oberon and King Frost. Both Personas are obtainable from Shuffle Time in Steamy Bathhouse.

Rank 1

As mentioned, Kanji's Rank 1 doesn't unlock in the main story. On June 9th, players will hear a rumor from a girl in the Classroom Building, 2F regarding Kanji. Once they do, they should go to Practice Building, 1F and speak with him to find out the truth. Since this is Rank 1, any answer chosen here won't add any points to the Social Link. Players simply need to select "Yes, I do" and they'll be transported to the Samegawa Flood Plain.

Going from Rank 9 to Rank 10 is automatic. Unfortunately, Kanji cannot be romanced. Now that Kanji's Social Link is complete, there's no need to continue getting Social Link points by hanging out with him or drawing fortunes at Tatsuhime Shrine.

During Rank 9-10, players will receive the Cute Strap Key Item from Kanji. This will allow them to Fuse the Ultimate Persona of the Emperor Arcana: Odin. Since it's a special item, the Cute Strap will carry over into NG+, meaning Odin can be fused as early as the first dungeon on a second playthrough.

In addition to this, Kanji awakens to Rokuten Maoh. He'll also get the Social Link Skill: Evade Wind. Since Kanji's Affinity Weakness is Wind, players should absolutely make room for it. Evade Wind will triple Kanji's evasion to Wind-based attacks. If players are aiming to get the True Ending, then they'll want to max out Kanji's Social Link in order to get his third-tier Persona, Takeji Zaiten, in January.
