Pentiment is a unique game in which players take control of Andreas Maler and solve mysteries in the supposedly quiet land of Tassing, near the Kiersau Abbey. Obsidian Entertainment really raised the bar for other decision-based games that will certainly come out in the future. In Pentiment, decisions truly matter, and leaving something behind or making a mistake can have serious consequences.

This article will talk about the Aedoc's Affliction quest in Act 2, and it will guide players through it to ensure that they don't forget about this old man. Here's how players can take care of his life-threatening illness before it's too late.

How To Start Aedoc's Affliction

talking to florian about aedoc's illness

During Act 2 in Pentiment, if Andreas enters the library through the secret door while the monks are held up in the Abbey's library, he will become aware that Brother Aedoc has started to experience chest pains, perhaps due to the confinement and stress. Brother Florian warns Andreas about this matter because, unfortunately, since he is stuck in the library, he cannot get his medical tools to help Aedoc. He advises Andreas to look for Sister Gertrude and ask about a medical plant to help with the condition.

Depending on when the player seeks out Sister Gertrude, she will either be located in the Convent Garden or inside the Shrine to St. Moritz.

Yellow Gentian Location

Sister Gertrude will ask Andreas to find Yellow Gentian so that she can prepare a curative broth to calm Brother Aedoc's body. She mentions that it can usually be found near the mountains, so he might be able to pick some in the forest.

When talking to Sister Gertrude about the flower required to help Aedoc, the player must not mention the flower that Caspar found. This may cause a bug to occur and prevent the player from continuing the Aedoc's Affliction quest, which leads to deadly consequences for the old man.

To reach the forest, Andreas must leave the Abbey and go to the Meadow area. The forest will be right on the left.

Andreas finds yellow gentian in Pentiment

There are several plants in the forest, but Yellow Gentian can only be found in the Waterfall area, just before the bridge.

Once collected, Andreas must hand it to Sister Gertrude, who will then ask for some time to prepare the broth. Once time passes in Pentiment, the player can return and collect the medicine. They must haste back to Aedoc to give him the medicine. This will help with the illness, saving his life, and in return, the player will receive The Cornish Patient achievement for their efforts and kindness.

Pentiment is available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One.
