Throughout just about every biome in PEAK, you will come across forageable consumables like coconuts, berries, mushrooms, and other foods. These items are different from consumables like Trail Mix or Granola Bars because they are not packaged goods.
PEAK: 10 Best Beginner Tips & Tricks
These beginner PEAK tips will help new players find their footing and start climbing to the top of the island with confidence.
Though most forageable items in PEAK are safe to eat, some mushrooms, berries, and other items will cause you to become poisoned on consumption. This guide explains how to tell what food is safe to eat in PEAK and offers tips on what to specifically look for when determining whether a mushroom or berry is safe to eat or not.
Which Mushrooms & Berries Are Safe in PEAK?
Many Berries & Mushrooms Have A Chance To Be Poisoned
While packaged foods are always safe to eat, some berries in PEAK are poisonous, and all mushrooms have a small chance of being poisonous. You can tell the difference between poisoned and non-poisoned foraged goods by looking for consumables with slightly different details or coloration compared to the normal item model.
- Generally, red, blue, and yellow Crispberries are all safe to eat in PEAK, though some variants will poison you on consumption (such as the Green and Yellow Kingberries).
- Region-specific Crispberries are all safe, too, like the Winterberry or the Scorchberry
- Some consumables are always poisoned, like the Green Crispberries that you can find in the Tropics and Shores regions.
- Additionally, all burnt foods will inflict a small amount of poison buildup when consumed. You can only get burnt food by intentionally overcooking a consumable at a campfire or portable stove.
Not all forageables of a single type are poisoned in the same run. If one Button Shroom in a cluster is poisoned, it doesn't necessarily mean the others are too. The chance is rolled for individual items, not groups of forageables, so one person may be poisoned while another is fine after eating mushrooms from the same bunch.
The poison effect from bad food is not immediate; it tends to take a few seconds for a foraged item to proc.
The only truly safe forageables in the game are non-green berries, regional berries, status effect foods (like the Remedy Shroom or Medicinal Root), and the Chubby Shroom. The Chubby Shroom is the only mushroom that does not have a poisonous variant. If you find a Chubby Shroom, there is no risk in eating it (or better yet, cooking it to restore more Hunger).

Visual Differences to Look Out For
Poisoned Food in PEAK Has a Slightly Different Appearance
There are some minor differences that you can look out for when assessing whether a mushroom or berry is safe to eat in PEAK. Look for these details on the various berries and mushrooms throughout the game to discern which foraged foods are safe and what you should avoid during a run:
-
All Green Crispberries will restore your stamina as normal, then inflict a minor amount of poison buildup on your stamina bar
- Stick to small red, yellow, and blue berries to avoid being poisoned
- The Green and Yellow Kingberry items will restore a lot of stamina, but inflict a lot of poison buildup
- The normal variant of the Bugle Shroom does not have webbing near the top of the mushroom stalk, while the poisonous variant does
- The normal variant of the Button Shroom has an X on top of the mushroom, while the poisonous variant has spots
- The normal variant of the Cluster Shroom has smooth stalks, while the poisonous variant has rougher stalks and is darker
