Before the season finale of Peacemaker even aired, creator James Gunn confirmed that the popular HBO Max series will return for a second season. Similar to season one of the first DC Extended Universe television series, Gunn will write all the episodes for the second season, but this time around, he will also be directing all of them himself.

Gunn confirmed the news regarding the second season of HBO Max's Peacemaker on his official Twitter account. “That’s right, #Peacemaker is coming back for Season Two,” he wrote, while thanking lead actor John Cena and the other cast members, the entire crew, and the streaming service for helping him bring the series to life. He also put in a special appreciation note for fans who have been watching the series on HBO Max.

After Gunn had shared the news of the series being carried forward, the main Peacemaker cast members began to celebrate on their respective social media channels. Cena, who portrays the role of the eccentric Peacemaker, was the first to acknowledge the news. “Learning about and eventually becoming #Peacemaker was an exercise in exploring the fun and absolutely genius mind of James Gunn. It’s been a privilege to work on this show and with the cast, crew and HBO Max team. Elated to say we’ll be back to create more peace for Season 2,” he wrote.

After Cena's note, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, Danielle Brooks, and Freddie Stroma also shared their excitement for the second season of Peacemaker and were all grateful to the fans. The actors portray the roles of Emilia Harcourt, John Economos, Vigilante, and Leota Adebayo respectively, and are integral members of Peacemaker's team in the mysterious “Project Butterfly.” With the season finale premiering on Thursday, it remains to be seen what their future holds. But, it seems safe to say that they will live to see another season.

Gunn has previously revealed that he wrote the Peacemaker script to pass the time during the ongoing pandemic. Cena's character in The Suicide Squad quickly became a fan favorite, and it only made sense to Gunn to continue his journey forward. At the time, he had no idea whether it would come to fruition, but HBO Max was willing to give the anti-hero, who would go to any extent for the sake of peace, a chance.
