PC gamers are currently able to grab the 2017 title Deep Sky Derelicts for free as part of GOG's giveaway program. Many players overlook GOG in favor of the more popular Epic Games Store and Steam, but in PC gaming, there isn't a better place to get ahold of older titles.
Deep Sky Derelicts is described as an "original combination of turn-based strategy and RPG" on the official Steam page, with "tactical card combat and popular roguelike elements." There are plenty of great RPGs out there for gamers to get stuck into, and it's exciting to hear that the game uses elements from a variety of sources to create something fresh and new. While it won't be for everyone, there's no harm in trying it for free.
The news was confirmed on the official GOG store, but gamers only have a limited time to grab Deep Sky Derelicts. The promotion runs until the end of the GOG Spring Sale on April 3. The game's reviews are "Mostly Positive" on Steam, so it's definitely worth checking out, especially as a freebie. GOG has been giving away a variety of games during its Spring Sale, with the horror game Lorelai available for free on GOG for a period last month. Unfortunately, this offer has now passed, but Deep Sky Derelicts offers plenty to keep gamers occupied. It can be picked up from GOG here.
Even for gamers who aren't planning to play Deep Sky Derelicts immediately, it's still worth adding to their library while it's free, just in case they want to play in the future. To purchase the game on Steam, it currently costs $19.99, so it's a steep saving for only a couple of button presses. It has the added advantage of being on GOG so is completely DRM-free. Many games use intrusive DRM systems like Denuvo, and it's not popular with a lot of players. Owning it on GOG means that players own the game forever, whereas Steam only licenses games to the player. It's a problem for in many years time, but it's nice to live safely in the knowledge that a player's games on GOG are their own.
Beyond Deep Sky Derelicts, there are plenty of games out there at the moment with free offerings. Marvel's Avengers recently made almost its entire marketplace available for free, as the developer prepares to sunset the title. It goes to show that by looking in the right places, gaming doesn't necessarily have to be an expensive hobby for people to get into.
