Torvian is a tricky boss in Act 4 of Path of Exile 2. Players unfamiliar with the mechanics specific to this boss fight may find it impossible to win. Torvian’s moves aren’t particularly hard to dodge or deal that much damage, but because of a gimmick, he can artificially increase his stats to become vastly overpowered.
Coming out victorious against Torvian requires a very specific strategy, as without it, he is all but invincible. Since defeating him is required to progress the main story of PoE 2, leaving him for later isn’t an option either.

How to Defeat Torvian in Path of Exile 2
In order to beat Torvian, you have to first disable a layer of temporary buffs he gains throughout the fight. Only by stripping down his defensive layers can he be fought in a normal state.
Phase 1: Target the Mages On the Sides of the Arena
Torvian is constantly being buffed by three mages stationed on top of the scaffolding on the sides of the boss arena, drastically increasing his damage, tankiness, and survivability. You cannot directly attack the mages or stop them in any way; the only method to counter them is by using the boss himself. Luckily, it’s fairly straightforward.
One of Torvian’s regular attacks is digging up a rock from the ground and throwing it at the player. If you dodge at the last second, the rock travels in a straight line, hitting the side of the arena. The trick to this fight is to have Torvian throw rocks at the mages buffing him on the sides of the arena, damaging the scaffolding they are standing on to interrupt their casting and stop their buffs from taking effect.
As long as you stand near a mage when Torvian is throwing a rock and dodge immediately before it hits, the boulder will smash the side of the arena and stop the buffs. This will give you a small window of opportunity where you can deal damage to Torvian in an unbuffed state.
There are three mages in total, each responsible for a separate buff. Due to the limited field of vision, it can be hard to visually identify which one of the mages is responsible for a buff without walking to the edge of the arena and seeing the glowing buff icon on the wall. An easy way to identify which mage you need to target is by paying attention to the status icons underneath the boss’s health bar.
- The dual sword icon represents the buff cast by the mage standing in the northern section of the arena (top).
- The hammer icon represents the buff cast by the mage standing in the western section of the arena (left).
- The shield icon represents the buff cast by the mage standing in the eastern section of the arena (right).
Since the rock travels the length of the arena, you can get Torvian to aim correctly even while standing right in the middle.
Phase 2: Dodge the Beam
After Torvian reaches one-third health, he will enter the final phase of the fight. The mages stop buffing Torvian in this state, and he also stops throwing rocks. To compensate, he will enter an enraged state, and gain a new attack.
- Beam of Light: Torvian summons a large beam of light that slowly moves across the arena in a circle, dealing massive damage.
In addition, Torvian also starts spamming buffed variants of all his previous attacks, now infused with extra holy damage. Notably, the most difficult to deal this is the Richocheting Chakram, as dodging it in combination with the other field effects is incredibly difficult.
