With the many difficult bosses you will need to take on in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, you might be surprised to learn that there are many hidden bosses in the game as well that are much more difficult than others. One of these is Bonetail, the older sibling to Hooktail who is one of the first bosses you encounter in the game, alongside the Quiz Thwomp outside the castle.

Despite Hooktail being a relatively simple and straightforward battle, Bonetail is not quite the same. Not only is the boss hidden in a secret location, but she also has incredibly powerful attacks that can easily knock out Mario and his partners. Here's how to defeat the destructive boss.

How to Find Bonetail in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

In order to take on Bonetail in a thrilling battle, you will have to find the boss in one particular location: The Pit of 100 Trials. We have a guide on where you can find The Pit of 100 Trials, and how you can prepare for the grueling adventure found in the sewers below Rogueport. There is information on the best partners to bring along, as well as items and badges that are recommended.

Specifically, Bonetail can be found on Floor 100 in The Pit of 100 Trials. She is the final boss that wraps up all the trials, allowing you to get the Return Postage Badge as a reward. This badge will make any attackers against Mario and his partners take half of the damage that they dish out. It's a great way to quickly knock out enemies in just a few rounds.

After you've located The Pit of 100 Trials and have made your way to Floor 100, you will be met with a short cutscene of Bonetail coming out of the shadows. Her stats are as follows:

  • HP: 200
  • Attack: 8
  • Defense: 2

Based on Goombella's Tattle, Bonetail has a few abilities that can potentially confuse or put Mario and his partners to sleep. When her HP is low, she can recover her health. When facing her, there are a few badges and items you'll want to bring along outside of your storage, including:

  • Feeling Fine & Feeling Fine P: These badges will give Mario and his partner immunity to poison and dizziness.
  • Life Shroom: This is a necessary item to have, as it revives downed characters and gives them 10 HP. It is highly likely that your partner might get knocked out once or twice, so come with a couple Life Shrooms.
  • Powerful Healing Items: Along with Life Shroom, you'll want to bring along a lot of powerful healing items to restore health, such as some Jelly Ultras or Ultra Shrooms.

With all of these items prepared, and any extra ones stored away, and a fully healed party before starting the battle, you should be ready to go in terms of keeping your team alive. When in battle, you will want to focus on using Power Lift and Sweet Feast. Power Lift is a Special Move that will increase Mario and his party's Attack, making it easier to take out Bonetail in fewer hits. You will want to use this Special Move as often as possible to buff Mario further, and then use Sweet Feast as well. This Special Move will restore HP for Mario and his partners, as well as FP. Remember to utilize Stylish Moves as much as possible to fill up your Star Gauge.

Along with these Special Moves, we recommend bringing along a partner like Madame Flurrie. This is because she can use Lip Lock to deal a large amount of damage to Bonetail while completely ignoring her defenses. She will also take the damage she dealt to heal herself, allowing her to act as a shield for Mario in the front row. You can also use Koops' Shell Shield ability to directly protect Mario if you need. Paired with Madame Flurrie's abilities, Mario can utilize his more powerful attacks, such as Power Bounce or Ultra Hammer to knock down Bonetail's HP, eventually winning the battle.
