Paper Mario: The Origami King Details Combat and Companions

Nintendo has just released a new trailer for the recently-announced Paper Mario: The Origami King. Clocking in at nearly six minutes, this new trailer gives an overview of the game along with a deeper look at Mario's companions and the combat system.

In the new trailer for Paper Mario: The Origami King, we learn that the Mushroom Kingdom is once again in trouble, this time because of the titular King Olli, who has seized Peach's castle and thrown the world into disarray. With the help of his sister Olivia, Mario must defeat the Legion of Stationary, untie the massive streamers blocking entry into the Princess's castle, and save Peach.

Joining Mario and Olivia on their quest is a roster of more traditional partner characters we saw in the original trailer. The ones we see in the trailer include Bobby, an amnesiac Bob-omb with no fuse, Professor Toad the archeologist, and the Magikoopa Kamek, who has taken up an interest in cleaning. It's also hinted that Bowser Jr. And his dad, who's gotten himself pretty badly folded up, will also be helping out our mustached hero.

Perhaps more interesting to the fans is a deeper look at the game's unique combat mechanics, which were also briefly shown in the original trailer. Combat in this rendition of Paper Mario takes on a puzzle-like spin as Mario stands in the center of a ring surrounded by his foes. By spinning the rings and sliding enemies around into rows, Mario's attacks become stronger. He can also use classic power-ups like POW Blocks and the Fire Flower against regular foes.

One thing the first trailer or Paper Mario's leak at the beginning of the year didn't show us is the boss battles against the Legion of Stationary, which includes such adversaries as a box of colored pencils, a rubber band golem, and the dreaded Tape. During these battles the boss sits in the center players have to build a path for Mario to follow to launch powerful attacks. Mario can also make use of his papercraft abilities to exploit his opponent's weaknesses, such as closing Colored Pencils' box so it hits itself with its pencil projectiles.

Players can experience all this and more when Paper Mario: The Origami King releases for the Nintendo Switch on July 17th.
