Summary
- Finding Pals with defensive skills like "Hard Skin" or "Burly Body" can greatly enhance one's party's combat abilities.
- Passive skills like "Legend" offer substantial boosts but are rare and usually only found on Legendary Pals.
- Breeding Pals with desirable passive skills can lead to improved combinations and more powerful creatures for one's party.
As players land on and explore the Palpagos Islands to catch their first Pals in Palworld, they will notice that each Pal in the game has a series of randomly assigned passive skills that greatly improve or decrease their stats. Each Pal can have from 0-4 passive skills at any one time, with each skill being granted a tier that indicates the level of the increase (or decrease) the creature will receive.
Palworld: 6 Best Foods
Food is important for not only satisfying hunger in Palworld, but for keeping you and your Pals sane. Here are the best options to cook.
Plenty of these Pals have defensive and resistance bonuses that greatly enhance a creature's capabilities in combat. When players find Pals with passive skills they like, they have the chance to breed Pals with each other in an attempt to get a better combination of skills. As such, if players are able to find or breed Pals with a number of the following passive skills, they will be rewarded with a worthy addition to their party.
6 Cheery
For Those Going Hunting in the Dark
- Tier: 1
- Effect: 10% Decrease to incoming Dark Damage
Seeking out Pals within the Dark elemental type can be a dangerous game. Most Pals of this type are nocturnal; they generally only spawn at night. Cheery benefits players in their effort to catch these Pals by providing a 10% decrease to incoming Dark damage.
At lower difficulties, this can be the difference between the affected Pal being able to take one more hit than they ordinarily would have. Nocturnal hunts can be dangerous for players and their parties, but Cheery should go some way to help level the playing field.
5 Suntan Lover
Resist a Common Damage Type
- Tier: 1
- Effect: 10% Decrease to incoming Fire Damage
This skill will become more and more useful as players get further into the game. Suntan Lover provides the Pal with a 10% decrease to incoming Fire damage. As players progress in the game, Fire Pals start to become more common, and players will be attempting to catch more and more of them.
Nearly a quarter of all Pals are Fire Element Pals, and a disproportionate number appear later in the game. Suntan Lover will be a useful resistance to have on Pals for when players begin this period of the game.
4 Hard Skin
A Simple Defensive Boost
- Tier: 1
- Effect: 10% Increase in Defense
A simple but very effective passive skill, Pals found or bred with Hard Skin will have an increased defense of 10%. This will provide a reduction in all types of damage that can be taken in Palworld. This will make the affected Pal a useful tool to take into engagements where the enemy type is unknown.
Palworld: Best Neutral Pals, Ranked
Neutral Pals have versatile skills and balanced stats that make them valuable assets in Palworld. Here are the best Neutral Pals everyone must have.
The Pal
Astegon has this defensive passive skill as a natural skill, meaning that any Astegons a player finds (and catches) will have a guaranteed 10% increase in their overall defense.
3 Stronghold Strategist
For Those Seeking Player Bonuses
- Tier: 3
- Effect: 10% Increase to Player Defense
Instead of granting boosts to individual Pals, Stronghold Strategist grants a boost to the defense of the actual player. The 10% increase in player defense that this skill provides works against all types of incoming damage.
A tier 3 skill, Stronghold Strategist will be very handy for players attempting to acquire the best Pals in the game who can deal significant damage during a catch attempt. It should also be noted that gamers need to have the Pal that has the skill with them to reap the benefits.
2 Legend
This Skill Comes With All Legendary Pals
- Tier: 3
- Effects: 20% Increase in Defense + Attack & 15% increase in Movement Speed
One of the best passive skills in Palworld and one that comes with Legendary Pals by default, Legend provides a speed, attack, and, most importantly, defense boost. These increases come in at 15%, 20%, and 20% respectively.
Palworld: Complete Passive Skills List
Passive Skills in Palworld can be helpful during combat and labor. For those curious, here's a list of all of them and descriptions of what they do.
The reason Legend is not higher is purely because of its rarity. Players will do very well to come across this skill on random Pals they meet in the game world. It is possible they won't find a Pal with this skill attached until they defeat and catch legendary Pals, like
Frostallion or
Jetragon.
1 Burly Body
Pure Defensive Might
- Tier: 3
- Effect: 20% Increase in Defense
Burly Body is the best defensive passive skill that Palworld has to offer to players. A tier 3 skill focusing purely on defensive capabilities, Burly Body grants the corresponding Pal a 20% increase to defense. When players come across this skill on random Pals, it is important to keep them around and start the breeding process to pass this skill on.
As it doesn't provide an attack or movement speed bonus, Burly Body is much more common than Legend and, as such, is the best pure defense passive skill players will find in Palworld. If players can equip a whole series of Pals with Burly Body, then they will be a match for anyone and anything.
