After investigating Elderwood’s minerals and infected plants in Palia's The Nature of Shadows quest, you’ll talk to Subira once more to show your interest in learning how to hunt infected creatures. Soon after, the Shot in the Dark quest begins.
In this Elderwood quest, Hassian will help you craft exceptional gear like his, so you can catch the strange creatures affected by the mysterious dark energy spreading through Elderwood. If you're up for the challenge, this guide will walk you through the steps to complete the Shot in the Dark quest in Palia.
Palia: All Elderwood Chest Locations
Hunting for every Elderwood Chest in Palia? Here's how to snag them all and check off that achievement.
How to Complete Shot in the Dark Quest in Palia
Players will need to wrap up the following steps:
Talk to Hassian
First off, you’ll need to talk to Hassian. Like other villagers, he follows a fixed routine, so open your map to locate him and fast travel there. Once you explain what you're after, he’ll tell you that you’ll need an arrow infused with Infected Essence to hunt the infected creatures. Then, he’ll hand over the material list needed to make the shaft and arrowhead.
Collect the Materials for the Arrow Shaft
To craft the arrow shaft in Palia, you’ll have to gather these items (you can also check the list in your inventory by clicking the exclamation mark):
- 1 Softwood – This is plain Sapwood. Just chop down trees around Kilima Valley and Bahari Bay to get it.
- 1 Heartwood – Cut down pine trees in Bahari Bay.
- 1 Enchanted Wood – Look for Flow-Infused trees with a purplish glow around Kilima Valley and Bahari Bay. These usually show up at night. A friend may be helpful to chop these.
- 1 Elderwood – Comes from the native Elderwood trees. Just chop them down.
Gather the Materials for the Arrowhead
With the shaft items sorted, move on to the arrowhead. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 Stone – Break regular rocks found all over the map.
- 1 Flint – You’ll often find Flint while mining stone around the map.
- 1 Clay – Mine Clay Nodes near Kilima Lake and Fisherman’s Lagoon in Kilima Valley.
- 1 Whitestone – Loot white rocks. You’ll find plenty of them in Elderwood.
Harvest Infected Essence
Along with the materials above, you’ll also need 10 Infected Essence to give to Hassian. These show up in Elderwood as floating purple orbs. You can also get Infected Essence by harvesting infected plants, fish, and bugs, but those require specific tools like the following:
- Tamala’s Potion for infected plants
- Elderwood Lure for infected fish
- Elderwood Smoke Bombs for infected bugs
If you don’t have these tools yet, simply roam around Elderwood and grab the purple orbs scattered throughout.
Return to Hassian
Once everything’s in your backpack, head back to Hassian and hand it all over. He’ll craft 20 Elderwood Arrows that let you hunt infected creatures. He’ll also toss in the arrow recipe, so you can always make more later. After this, the Shot in the Dark quest officially wraps up in Palia.
