During a game of the original Overwatch, a Wrecking Ball player uses their Grappling Claw to get revenge on an enemy Mei. While many players have been sharing highlights from Overwatch 2, this Overwatch 1 clip is not only a throwback to the original game but also shows how effective Wrecking Ball can be once a player masters his abilities.
As one of the DLC characters introduced in the original Overwatch, Wrecking Ball, also known as Hammond, has been a part of the series for almost five years. Over that time, players have attempted to master the mechanized ball that the hamster rolls around in, with varying levels of success. While his abilities, such as his Grappling Claw and Minefield, can be highly disruptive during a battle, it takes a lot of practice to get down.
Nevertheless, one fan showed how satisfying it could be to play the character when used correctly. In a post on Reddit, a user known as ImpracticalTokers shared a clip taken from the MEKA Base section of the Busan map. The Overwatch highlight began with the Reddit user, who was playing as Wrecking Ball, getting frozen by Mei. After a few moments, they rolled off the bridge in an attempt to get away from their attacker. While the opposing Mei likely expected them to grapple back toward the point, ImpractialTokers had other ideas.
After rolling off the edge of the bridge, the Reddit user used Wrecking Ball's Grappling Claw to hook onto the ceiling, preventing them from falling into the abyss. They then swung upwards and what appeared to be toward the objective. However, ImpractialTokers let the momentum of their mechanized ball propel them back to where they came from. This made them collide with the unsuspecting Mei player, causing the enemy to be knocked back into the void.
Unsurprisingly, numerous members of the Overwatch community on Reddit applauded the heads-up play that ImpracticalTokers called their “best wrecking ball kill to date.” In only a few days, the post has already amassed over 5.2K upvotes, suggesting many other gamers agreed with them. In fact, numerous fans of the Overwatch series talked about the highlight in the comment section. “As a Wreckingball playing ledge lord, I approve of this clip,” Successful-Idea-2373 said. In addition, another user complimented the player on their fast thinking, as they noted they did not expect to see them come back to eliminate the Mei.
This throwback clip from ImpractialTokers comes as players continue to play Wrecking Ball in Overwatch 2. Despite not being one of the most popular picks in the meta, the hero can be frustrating to play against if used correctly. In addition, a new Wrecking Ball exploit was discovered that allowed the hero to keep the extra shields from Adaptive Shield, even when no one was nearby. It will be interesting to see what other clips fans post of Hammond in the coming days.
Overwatch 2 is available in early access for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
