Every year, Overwatch fans have a number of special seasonal events to look forward to, including the popular Halloween Terror event in October and the Anniversary event every May. Another popular seasonal event in Overwatch typically takes place in December in the form of Winter Wonderland, giving fans the check out snow-covered versions of the PvP maps and unlock a variety of holiday-themed cosmetics.

Typically, the Overwatch Winter Wonderland event starts mid-December, with the latest it's ever been started being December 15 for Winter Wonderland 2020. The event then runs for a few weeks, wrapping up in early January. While a specific date has yet to be announced for Overwatch Winter Wonderland 2021, many had assumed that the event would start sometime this week, and while that may very well still happen, it looks like it will be taking place a little later than expected.

Overwatch community manager AndyB took to the game's official forums to confirm that, due to "unforeseen circumstances," the Winter Wonderland 2021 event would be pushed back "by just a few days." So it's possible it could still start by the end of this week, but it's also possible that fans will have to wait until next week to check out the new Overwatch Winter Wonderland content. AndyB added that "Personal opinion, but the art team really sleighed it with this year's legendary skins," teasing that there may be a skin related to Santa's sleigh.

Overwatch Winter Wonderland Begins

If there is a Santa's sleigh-themed skin coming in the Overwatch Winter Wonderland event, it may narrow down who the skin is for. The most obvious possibility that springs to mind is Tank hero D.Va, who hasn't had a Winter Wonderland skin despite being in the hero-shooter since launch. It would make sense to somehow convert D.Va's mech to look like a sleigh, while giving D.Va herself some kind of Santa-themed attire.

However, this is just speculation at this time. While the Overwatch Winter Wonderland 2021 event will certainly add new skins for players to unlock, none of them have actually been revealed to fans at the time of this writing. And it's also possible that AndyB was simply making a Christmas pun when they used the word "sleigh" as opposed to referencing a specific skin that's coming in the event.

Besides new cosmetics, the Overwatch Winter Wonderland 2021 event will see the return of the game's winter-themed modes, like Mei's Snowball Offensive and Yeti Hunter.
