Summary

  • Blizzard is working on an unannounced FPS-RPG.
  • This is according to ChrisMcCabe's LinkedIn profile.
  • McCabe is the Overwatch series product manager, which has led fans to believe the unannounced game is an OW spin-off.

A new rumor making the rounds online suggests that Blizzard could potentially be making an Overwatch spin-off game. Overwatch has been wildly successful since it initially launched in 2016. While there have certainly been some bumps in the road, particularly with the transition to Overwatch 2, the hero-shooter is still enjoyed by millions of players to this day and really shows no signs of slowing down.

Overwatch's lore has largely expanded through animated shorts and comics, with fans always excited to learn more about the game's interesting world. Considering just how expansive Overwatch's lore is, some have hoped to see Blizzard explore it in spin-off projects. Nothing official has been announced, but there is at least some hope that Blizzard could be working on a spin-off of its hero-shooter game.

Blizzard makes a random change to Damage hero Venture that it did not mention in the latest update's patch notes.

Timur222 on Twitter noticed that Blizzard's ChrisMcCabe's LinkedIn profile states that besides Overwatch 2, he is working on an unannounced project. The unannounced game is reportedly an RPG-FPS title in development for PC and consoles, but that's where the details end. While this could certainly be an original IP or tied to one of Blizzard's other properties, what makes fans think that this unannounced project is tied to Overwatch is the fact that McCabe is OW's product manager.

Blizzard Working on Unannounced RPG-FPS

The hope that many fans have when it comes to a potential Overwatch FPS-RPG would be for the concepts that were supposed to come with OW2's campaign to actually see the light of day. When it was first announced, Overwatch 2 was said to feature a leveling system for its heroes on top of its single-player story mission. These ideas were scrapped when Overwatch 2 PvE was finally added, but maybe it can live on in this unannounced project. Again, this is all assuming that the unannounced project is indeed an Overwatch game and not something completely unrelated.

If Blizzard does make an Overwatch spin-off game, it will be interesting to see what form it takes. It could feature all the playable characters from Overwatch 2, but it could also benefit from a more focused approach. Overwatch's characters all have unique abilities and could carry a solo game in their own right, though it would be tough to pick one for the job.

Time will tell if an Overwatch spin-off game exists. For now, Overwatch fans can check out Season 12, which includes the debut of new Support hero Juno and the Clash game mode. Future seasons are on the way as well, though it's unclear exactly what they will bring to the table.
