Summary
- Overwatch 2 Season 12 brings a collaboration with WoW, featuring a Sylvanas Widowmaker skin and possible future crossover skins.
- Fans can expect more details on the collaboration in September, according to Blizzard.
- This Sylvanas skin may just be the beginning of many cosmetics in the WoW x Overwatch 2 event, with potential for a Junker Queen or Genji skin.
Overwatch 2 just revealed a new Widowmaker skin that transforms the sharpshooter into Sylvanas Windrunner, one of the most iconic characters in World of Warcraft. This Overwatch 2 cosmetic is coming later in Season 12, and will be a part of its upcoming crossover with World of Warcraft ahead of the latter franchise’s 30-year anniversary.
Season 12 of Overwatch 2 has officially begun, bringing a new game mode, hero, and Battle Pass refresh to the Blizzard FPS. However, the season trailer had a stinger that teased a collaboration between World of Warcraft and Overwatch 2, with a shot featuring Frostmourne, the blade of Arthas, the Lich King.
Overwatch 2 Reveals Juno's Backstory
Overwatch 2 reveals an out-of-this-world backstory for Juno, the brand-new support hero coming to the game in Season 12, New Frontiers.
Now, Overwatch 2 has revealed the first skin that will be a part of this upcoming crossover with Warcraft. During its presentation during Gamescom Opening Night Live, Blizzard president Johanna Faries debuted Sylvanas Widowmaker, a new cosmetic that turns the Talon sniper into the former Banshee Queen of the Forsaken. At the moment, the method of acquiring this skin is currently unknown, though fans shouldn’t be surprised if it is purchased with Overwatch Coins or via in-game store bundles, given its quality.
New Overwatch 2 x WoW Skin – Sylvanas Widowmaker
When it comes to Warcraft characters, Sylvanas Windrunner is as iconic as she is controversial. Originally the Ranger-General of the High Elves of Quel’thalas, and a sharpshooter on par with fantasy archers like Legolas, Sylvanas was slain by the Lich King and raised as his servant in Warcraft 3. She later broke free of his control and founded the Forsaken, a kingdom of undead freed from Arthas' control, and one of the original Horde races in WoW. Though her actions in recent years have been polarizing, she still remains one of the most popular characters in World of Warcraft to this day.
While Blizzard has yet to give a start date for the World of Warcraft collaboration coming during Overwatch 2 Season 12, Faries said it should arrive in September. According to the in-game interface, Season 12 is set to end on October 15, so September makes the most sense, as the majority of the season will take place during that month. Fans can likely expect to learn more in the next few weeks.
This Sylvanas skin is only the first of many cosmetics coming in this WoW x Overwatch 2 event. If the teaser is any indication, fans will likely see a Lich King skin for Reinhardt, Junker Queen, or Genji, as they are the only heroes who use a weapon similar to Frostmourne. Additionally, Overwatch 2 could possibly tie these skins into WoW: The War Within like Diablo 4 did with its own Xal’atath Necromancer garb. Either way, between these new cosmetics and the existing ones in the game already, there may soon be enough to have two full Overwatch 2 teams sporting different World of Warcraft skins.
