During its recent gameplay trailer for the Overwatch 2 x World of Warcraft anniversary event, Torbjorn made a reference to Leeroy Jenkins, one of the most iconic memes in WoW history. The new World of Warcraft skins and their associated collectibles, along with the in-game event activities, are available in Overwatch 2 now.
Overwatch 2 is holding an in-game World of Warcraft event to celebrate the MMO’s upcoming 20th anniversary. The main attractions of the collaboration are its four new skins, which render Widowmaker, Reinhardt, Zenyatta, and Torbjorn as Sylvanas, the Lich King, Thrall, and diamond Magni respectively.
Overwatch 2 Teases Tank Changes and Sombra Nerf
Overwatch 2 teases plans for some balance updates in its mid-Season 12 patch and beyond, including nerfs to Sombra and several powerful tank heroes.
However, while showing off some of these collectibles that players can pick up, Overwatch 2 hearkened back to one of World of Warcraft’s most well-known memes. During the gameplay trailer Overwatch 2 released to hype up the collab, Torbjorn leaps from his turret, charges into oncoming fire, and shouts “Let’s do this! TORBJORN LINDHOLM!” – a reference to infamous WoW raider Leeroy Jenkins. The reference doesn't end there; at the end of the trailer, Torbjorn then says “At least I have chicken,” another of Leeroy Jenkins' famous lines.
Leeroy Jenkins Callback in Overwatch 2 x WoW Event
Leeroy Jenkins originates from the 2005 video, “A Rough Go,” in which the eponymous Paladin runs off into The Rookery in Upper Blackrock Spire during a strategy meeting, getting his entire party killed by dragon whelps. Though the meme was most likely staged, it became a viral sensation that persists to this day, with NPCs and references to it appearing both in and out of World of Warcraft. US congressional representative Jared Huffman even evoked the iconic WoW video in a session to choose the Speaker of the House in early 2023.
Unfortunately, these Leeroy Jenkins lines do not appear to be be collectible in the World of Warcraft x Overwatch 2 collaboration. However, all four heroes do get other iconic voice lines, including “Dark Lady watch over you” for Widomaker and "Frostmourne Hungers" for Reinhardt. Every skin but Magni Torbjorn also gets an amazing highlight intro, with one of Widowmaker featuring Sylvanas’ bow, one of Reinhardt that calls back to the WoW: Wrath of the Lich King cinematic trailer, and one of Zenyatta where he wields the Doomhammer.
The Overwatch 2 x WoW skins, along with all the voice lines, sprays, emotes, and highlight intros, are all obtained via the bundles in the in-game cash shop. However, the event also includes challenges that can be completed simply by playing the game. Completing these quests awards some WoW-themed sprays, name cards, and player titles, as well as a bunch of Battle Pass experience. The crossover event is live now, and runs throughout the rest of September, so players should have plenty of time to pick up their favorite WoW skins and complete the in-game event in Overwatch 2.
