Summary

  • Blizzard introduces Stadium in Season 16 of Overwatch 2 as the game's biggest new game mode yet.
  • Stadium is a 5v5, Best of 7 Competitive mode with role queue and currency for hero stat boosts and new abilities.
  • Stadium allows players to experience gameplay in third-person.

Blizzard has pulled the curtain back on the big new Stadium game mode coming to Overwatch 2 as part of Season 16. When Overwatch 2 debuted, it did so with the brand-new Push game mode. Later, Blizzard added Flashpoint and Clash. However, the response to some of these modes have been mixed.

Overwatch 2 fans have been split on Push, Flashpoint, and Clash, with Blizzard adjusting the modes and maps associated with them accordingly based on fan feedback. When it comes to Clash, Blizzard has taken even more drastic measures, pulling Clash from Competitive Play starting with Season 15. The next big move Blizzard is making with Overwatch 2 game modes is adding Stadium, which is billed as the biggest game mode that the team has worked on for the entirety of the sequel.

Overwatch 2: All Tank Heroes, Ranked

Bring the best tank in Overwatch 2 to ensure the enemy team is steamrolled, and the allies come out to sweet victory, every time.

Coming in Season 16, Overwatch 2 Stadium mode is a 5v5, Best of 7 Competitive experience with role queue and its own ranking system that consists of Control, Clash, and Push modes. Players earn currency each round that can be used to boost the stats of their heroes. Examples given include reducing cooldown times or increasing a team's armor. Players will also be able to unlock special mod powers for their heroes, with Reaper getting the ability to fly, Mercy having the power to enchant a teammate so they are resurrected immediately upon death, Rein being able to charge while keeping his shield up, Soldier expanding the range of his healing, and Kiriko being able to turn herself into a DPS through buffs and gaining the ability to teleport directly to enemies. This doesn't sound unlike some of the plans that were announced for the scrapped Overwatch 2 PvE mode, which would also have let players upgrade their heroes.

Overwatch 2 Stadium Mode Lets You Play in Third-Person

Overwatch has primarily been a first-person experience since the original game launched in 2016, but Stadium will let players experience all the chaos in third-person. While first-person is still an option, choosing the third-person mode will let players get a better look at their various Overwatch 2 skins and cosmetics while trying to win the Best of 7 matches in the Stadium.

As with all Overwatch 2 game modes, Blizzard plans on expanding Stadium in future updates. Payload Race and Paintball were some of the new possible match types mentioned, but fans can expect the addition of more maps and other features as well. When Stadium launches in Overwatch 2 Season 16, only 14 heroes will be available, but more will be added on a regular basis. Overwatch 2 fans can look forward to the new content coming in Season 15, like the perk system, while they wait for more details on Stadium and Season 16.
