  • Fans have praised Juno's comic and backstory, while yearning for more cinematic animations for the game.
  • Blizzard's focus on narrated comics like "The Red Promise" may signal a shift in storytelling for new Overwatch 2 heroes, with fewer animations.

Overwatch 2 just revealed “The Red Promise,” a narrated comic detailing the backstory of Juno, its newest hero. This charming tale tells of the Martian hero’s origin, and of the events that led her back to Earth to join the cast of Overwatch 2.

During BlizzCon 2023, Overwatch 2 revealed the first two heroes coming in 2024: Venture and Juno. Originally codenamed “Space Ranger,” Juno was described as a high-mobility support hero. Venture came to the game during Season 10, and now, Juno arrives in Season 12, which goes live in Overwatch 2 on August 20.

Overwatch 2 Venture Fans Not Happy About Latest Announcement

Overwatch 2 Venture fans aren't happy with Blizzard after the latest announcement about the popular Damage character.

Ahead of her official debut, Overwatch 2 has revealed Juno’s backstory. “The Red Promise” is a short comic narrated by Xanthe Huynh, the voice actor for Juno, that details the hero’s origin on Mars. The first and only Martian, Juno was born and raised on the Mars base established to terraform the red planet to make it habitable. However, when the project’s benefactors on Earth suddenly cut contact, the scientists realized they were living on borrowed time. They built a ship for the Overwatch 2 hero to escape on, but she vowed to return to Earth and find someone to help save her family and her planet.

Overwatch 2 Juno Backstory Comic – "The Red Promise"

When Overwatch 2 first teased Juno with her crashed ship on the Dorodo map, fans discovered a picture of Mei and her old astrophysicist friend Jiayi, as well as a Morse code signal playing from the pod transmitted the initial “J.” This led many Overwatch 2 players to erroneously assume Space Ranger was Jiayi, when in fact, the new Martian hero is actually Jiayi’s daughter, Juno.

While Overwatch 2 fans absolutely loved this comic, and find Juno’s journey both heartfelt and compelling, many would have loved to see it animated. Blizzard motion stories and cinematics are renowned for their quality and cinematography, and many new heroes in Overwatch and its sequel received at least one, if not both.

Unfortunately, recent Overwatch 2 heroes have been gradually getting fewer animations pertaining to their backstory as of late. Lifeweaver, Mauga, and Illari got animated motion stories detailing their origins, Mauga and Venture both received short animations – with the latter’s being less than a minute long – and Venture got a narrated comic like Juno, but there haven’t been new character cinematics in Overwatch 2 since the game’s release. With much of Overwatch 2’s story team seemingly having been let go during Blizzard’s layoffs earlier this year, narrated comics like “The Red Promise” may become the new norm.
