  • Director reveals an upcoming experimental 6v6 mode similar to Quick Play Hacked to counter specific team compositions.
  • A new competitive season for 2025 was teased, along with free wintery cosmetics, including the Avatar: The Last Airbender event.

In the latest Director’s Take, Overwatch 2’s game director Aaron Keller gave players more information about the future of 6v6, as well as insight into Hazard's performance, holiday-themed cosmetics, and 2024 competitive rewards. Aaron Keller’s blog post updates fans on what's next for 6v6 in Overwatch 2, as players have been wanting this game mode to make a return ever since the introduction of 5v5.

The biggest change brought by Overwatch 2 compared to its predecessor is the introduction of 5v5 matches, instead of the original 6v6 competitions. By removing a tank from each team, 5v5 changes the dynamic of fights, focusing more on teamplay and fast-paced action. This change made some Overwatch 2 players nostalgic for the 6v6 mode, hoping it would eventually make a comeback. Overwatch 2 brought back 6v6 as a time-limited game mode, making a variety of changes to the hero's abilities to allow the possibility to play with 2 tanks, 2 supports, and 2 DPS characters.

Aaron Keller shared more information about the future of 6v6 in Overwatch 2 in his latest Director’s Take. The game director revealed that a new experimental version of 6v6 will be available in Overwatch 2 later this year, though he wouldn't commit to the mode's future beyond that. This new 6v6 mode will play similarly to the Quick Play Hacked mode, where up to three heroes of a single role can be on the same team, as long as there is at least one hero in each role. This rule will remove the possibility for players to use the infamous GOAT team composition, while allowing them to rediscover the 6v6 game mode that made the original 2016’s Overwatch popular.

The future of 6v6 in Overwatch 2 and what's to come for 2025

On top of teasing these 6v6 changes, Aaron Keller brought feedback on Hazard's performance. He mentioned that while the new hero was popular among players, the Overwatch 2 team had to make various changes to his abilities to make Hazard’s win rates better in Season 14 compared to his trial weekend. Keller teased upcoming changes to competitive games with the launch of the first season of 2025, without revealing more information for now.

While players wait for more information on both the future of 6v6 in Overwatch 2 and the new competitive season, they can claim wintery cosmetics for free with a specific in-game holiday challenge. New Overwatch 2 Twitch drops are available to celebrate the holiday season, with themed sprays, charms, epic skins, and player icons to collect. The Avatar: The Last Airbender event is still live in Overwatch 2, letting players grab more cosmetics until the event ends on December 30.
