A change to the popular Cultist Zenyatta skin in Overwatch 2 has disappointed fans of the original game, leaving them to guess Blizzard's motive behind the change. Overwatch 2 launched with numerous game-breaking bugs, and fans of the online popular hero shooter are starting to second-guess the finer details of old skins.
Overwatch 2 player and Reddit user u/SeeOurTea noticed some glaring differences between the old Cultist Zenyatta skin and the current rendition available within the game now. In the original Overwatch, the Cultist skin featured green Lovecraftian-style runes that would glow around Zenyatta's signature support orbs while performing the Meditate emote. The green glow effect complements Zenyatta's black and purple Cthulhu-like appearance, but the skin has been altered in Overwatch 2. The bright green runes have been replaced entirely, and fans are unhappy with the change.
In Overwatch 2, the green runes seen in Cultist Zenyatta's sitting animation have been replaced by dim orange runes. The orange runes are not as prominent or stylish as the green ones shown in u/SeeOurTea's comparison video, so fans in the Overwatch Reddit community aren't happy about the change. The Cultist skin's green glow made the skin desirable among Zenyatta players, and fans believe the revised skin is a sign of Blizzard's lack of attention to detail within Overwatch 2. The change caused some users to analyze various skins within Overwatch 2, such as Tracer's All Star skin and Ana's Corsair Skin. For example, Ana's Corsair skin is missing its parrot due to another bug.
Reddit users noticed that Zenyatta's orb pupils no longer move while in character select, leading others to question Blizzard's reasoning for changes involving the character's appearance. Hero skins continue to be a recurring issue within Overwatch 2, according to Blizzard's bug report page. Further, some Overwatch 2 players are losing skins earned from the previous game, while others are unable to access the entire in-game shop.
Oddly enough, Overwatch 2's Zenyatta Clockwork skin is among the most intricate skins currently in the game while the fan-favorite Cultist skin is missing its bright green glow. The Clockwork skin should serve as a good example for Blizzard to continue following when introducing new Overwatch 2 skins.
Blizzard will introduce over 30 new skins in Overwatch 2 Season 2 starting this December. Season 2 features a new Tank Hero, a new map, and multiple balance adjustments as well. However, it's clear that Blizzard still has a lot of work to do in order to keep many of its dedicated Overwatch players happy.
Overwatch 2 is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
