Overwatch 2 is closing in on its third anniversary since its release in October 2022. As Blizzard's hero-shooter approaches Season 15, it's worth noting that the game has gone through an extensive number of changes. Looking ahead to Overwatch 2 in 2025, it’s certain that even more major updates are on the horizon.
As Team 4 continues to innovate and introduce fresh ideas to the game, fans are hoping for more uniquely themed battle passes. Past seasons have featured engaging themes like Cyberpunk, Norse mythology, and Dungeons and Dragons-inspired skins. If the survey skins for Overwatch 2 are anything to go by, then the game's upcoming content has great potential.
Marvel Rivals’ Approach to One Feature is Something Overwatch 2 Desperately Needs
Though Overwatch 2 is focusing on its PvP experience, there's still potential to expand on the lore by borrowing a feature from Marvel Rivals.
Popular Seasonal Themes Overwatch 2 Has Yet to Explore
A Japanese Yokai Themed Battle Pass
Leaked in a more recent survey conducted by Blizzard, the Japanese Yokai theme caught the attention of several players. Yokai are supernatural spirits and are a significant part of Japanese folklore. An expansive theme for an upcoming season could include the survey skins of Kiriko, Ashe, Widowmaker, and Roadhog alongside other Japanese heroes like Genji and Hanzo.
The Yokai theme is not to be confused with the Yokai group that fights the Hashimoto clan in Overwatch 2's in-game universe.
An Enchanted Forest-Themed Battle Pass
A bog-related enchanted forest theme was the focus of one of the Overwatch 2 skin concepts introduced in April 2024. While Orisa has a Forest Spirit Legendary spear, this theme has yet to be fully explored to its full potential. When curating a wishlist, fans indicated that the fantasy fairy-like elements of these skins were incredibly compelling. Perhaps it could be somewhat similar to the aesthetic of Season 5, which included the limited-time-event Questwatch and associated cosmetics.
A Noir-Themed Battle Pass
For Noir enthusiasts, the April survey skins were particularly interesting as they included Soldier: 76, Reaper, Ana, and Sojourn. As a genre, Noir is particularly influenced by crime film and fiction, which often study themes of moral ambiguity, fatalism, and mistrust. Considering Sojourn already has a Cyber Detective skin, this seems like a good fit for her. In a season that encompasses darker themes, Reaper stands out as a prime candidate, though characters like Ramattra also shine. Meanwhile, possible femme fatales like Moira, Widowmaker, and Sombra are perfect fits for the theme.
A Battle Animal Themed Battle Pass
Although members of the community have expressed interest in seeing more cute animal characters in Overwatch 2, similar to Jeff the Land Shark from Marvel Rivals, an animal-themed battle pass could be a fantastic addition. Illari, Juno, Widowmaker, and Ashe were the focus of the November 2024 survey skins with this theme, but there is a lot of potential for other characters as well. Mercy, D.Va, and Sombra's cat skins have strongly resonated with fans, so expanding on this theme could make for a fun season.
Honorable mentions include seasonal themes that surround Formal Wedding attire, Community Memes, and Celestial beings. Some elements of these games have also been added to the game before, but not as in-depth overarching battle pass themes. The Winton souvenir from Overwatch 2 Season 10 was a big hit among the community, highlighting the potential if Blizzard decided to dedicate a full season to long-running community jokes.
