The Droughtlander is real. Lucky for fans, the wait is almost over. Outlander Season 8 will premiere on Starz on Friday, March 6, 2026. With so many intertwining plot threads that are woven through time, it's tough to keep track of everything that's already happened in Outlander. Having such a long break in between seasons also makes it hard to remember what's going on without watching some recaps or binging through the whole show again.
It was nice to have the prequel series Blood of My Blood as a way to keep fans invested in the franchise before the mainline series wrapped up, but now it's time to get back to everyone's favorite time-crossed lovers. Major unresolved plot points include the mystery of Master Raymond, the possibility of time-traveling, and the tension surrounding Jamie’s “recorded death”.
7 Jamie and Claire Are Still Very Much a Part of the American Revolution
Although Jamie and Claire are away from the front lines, the War for Independence and its aftermath still threaten to catch up with the Fraser family. Claire was desperately worried Jamie would be hurt or killed during the Battle of Monmouth, but Jamie emerged from the fray unscathed. Claire, however, was shot by a Redcoat while tending to injured soldiers in a triage tent.
While Claire was injured and possibly on her deathbed, Jamie sent in his resignation from the Continental Army in a dramatic way: by writing "Sir, I resign" in Claire's own blood on the back of a messenger. Though Jamie is now not an official soldier, he has a soldier's heart, and if fans have learned anything from the past seven seasons of Outlander, Jamie and Claire are never in the clear for very long.
6 Ian and Rachel Plan Their Future at Fraser’s Ridge With a Baby on the Way
In Outlander Season 7, Ian married Rachel Hunter, and they are navigating their new life together, having survived the dangers of the war and the vengeful Arch Bug. Rachel's brother, Denzell Hunter, played a key part in Season 7 as Claire's surgeon. Denzell saved Claire's life after she was shot in the abdomen. After Claire is well again, she and Jamie are planning to return to North Carolina. Ian and Rachel are thinking of going with them, but Ian knows that Rachel might want to stay near her brother.
Ian tells Rachel about his small plot of land at Fraser's Ridge, illustrating what their life might look like there, tending to the land and trying to stay out of the way of bears and wild boar. All Rachel wants to know from Ian is if the Ridge is a place where they can be content and raise a family. Rachel is pregnant! The happy news of a new birth on the horizon is dampened by the discovery of a dead Rollo, Ian's wolfdog companion who died in his sleep.
5 Roger and Brianna Finally Reunite in the 18th Century After Jemmy’s Kidnapping Scare
Roger and Brianna are finally back together again in the 18th century. Roger traveled back in time with his ancestor, Buck MacKenzie, to rescue his son Jemmy from Rob Cameron, who had kidnapped him. For most of Season 7, Brianna and Mandy are still in 1980s Scotland, dealing with Roger's absence and the loss of Jemmy.
Brianna and Mandy reunite with Jemmy, who was hidden in the dam, not actually kidnapped through time, and all three of them travel through the stones hoping to reunite with Roger and Buck. Luckily, through the Standing Stones' magic of thinking of home and your family being your home, Brianna, Jemmy, and Mandy are able to travel to the right time. Last we see them, they are walking up the path of Lallybroch and tearfully reuniting with Roger.
4 Claire’s Marriage to Lord John Grey Changes Everything for Jamie
Lord John Grey and Jamie's friendship was severely fractured after Claire married John, thinking Jamie was dead, and subsequent misunderstandings during the war. John was only trying to help Claire; a woman on her own is susceptible to many dangers during this time period, but if she has the protection of a husband, especially a husband with status, she is much safer.
John and Claire's marriage is a hollow echo of how Jamie and Claire came to be married. Claire was mourning her life in the 1940s and her first husband, Frank Randall. Jamie stepped up and married her to give her protection from the wrath of Black Jack Randall, Frank's ancestor. Though Jamie and Claire ended up falling in love, that's not the case with John and Claire. John was also in love with Jamie, though he respected Jamie's relationship with Claire and disinterest in a romantic or sexual relationship with John. Still, they've had a strong and enduring friendship for many years. John raised Jamie's bastard child, William Ransom, as his own after William's mother died of post-birth complications.
After Jamie returns from supposedly being dead, he's angry about the situation he finds John and Claire in — even more so to find out that they slept together. Even though it was out of their combined desire for Jamie and shared grief, Jamie still felt like it was a betrayal. Jamie violently beats John and leaves him to be taken prisoner by Continental soldiers. John eventually escapes and survives, though his friendship with Jamie will never be the same.
3 William Ransom’s Tragic Loss and the Shocking Faith Connection
Jamie's biological son, William Ransom, a British soldier, has faced deep moral conflicts and disillusionment regarding his loyalty to the Crown and his feelings toward his, unbeknownst to him, biological father. After finding out he is a bastard, he spends quite a bit of time with a prostitute named Jane. They develop a friendship which turns into a sexual relationship. Toward the end of Outlander Season 7, Jane is arrested for murdering a man named Captain Harkness, who had not only been sexually violent while purchasing time with Jane, but he also paid to take the maidenhead of Jane's younger sister Fanny, who is only 11 years old.
William enlists Jamie's help to save Jane from the gallows, but they are too late. They find Jane has taken her own life. William is overcome with grief, and Jamie is at a loss as to how to comfort his son who wants nothing to do with him. Later, we discover that Jane might be the daughter of Jamie and Claire's first daughter, Faith, who they believed to be stillborn. William hasn't heard these suspicions yet, as Outlander Season 7 ended on this massive cliffhanger, but this revelation is sure to majorly impact William's already crumbled sense of self.
2 The Truth About Master Raymond and His Connection to Faith
Claire heard Jane's little sister Fanny singing a 20th-century song, leading to speculation that this child might be connected to the daughter Claire lost in Season 2, named Faith. Claire and Jamie, and all the fans, believed Faith to be stillborn. Her loss was devastating. But now that the name has resurfaced — Jane and Fanny's mother's name was Faith — as well as the song Claire sang to her baby, we're all wondering what really happened to Faith.
Master Raymond, a mysterious figure from Outlander Season 2, might hold the answer. He is a confirmed time traveler, and his influence on Claire's life remains a lingering, unexplained mystery. Does Master Raymond have anything to do with Faith going on to live? Did Master Raymond raise Faith? Did they travel forward in time and that's how she learned the song Claire sang to her? Or, did she somehow remember it? Did Master Raymond hear Claire singing the song to baby Faith and sing it to her to keep Claire’s memory alive in her mind? With this revelation being the cliffhanger that closed out Season 7, Outlander Season 8 is sure to focus on this plot point as the series approaches its finale.
1 Outlander Still Needs to Explain Jamie Fraser’s Ghost in Inverness
Outlander needs to finally address the identity of the ghost that was watching Claire in 1940s Inverness, which is widely believed to be Jamie, as he has not yet died in the series. Diana Gabaldon, the author of the Outlander books, has confirmed that the ghost Frank Randall saw watching Claire in Outlander Season 1, Episode 1, "Sassenach," is indeed Jamie Fraser. Gabaldon also confirmed that Jamie cannot travel forward in time. He does not have the genetic capability that allows time travel.
So how is Jamie's standing in the rain in 1940s Scotland? There's definitely a supernatural element at play. In Season 7, Episode 2, "The Happiest Place on Earth," Jamie tells Claire about a dream he had, where he was looking through a window at Claire, and she was surrounded by light. The night in question was Samhain, a night where the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest. Some Outlander fans theorize that when Jamie suffered a snake bite and was close to death in Season 5, Episode 9, "Monsters and Heroes", that's when his soul traveled forward in time and saw Claire. Regardless of how this all came to be, Outlander Season 8 needs to come full circle and explain what we saw in the first episode.
