Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds was a breath of fresh, sarcastic air in the sci-fi RPG landscape, offering colorful combat, corporate dystopia, and a flexible arsenal consisting of unorthodox artillery as its main draws. Now, with The Outer Worlds 2 officially coming later this year, Obsidian Entertainment has released a trailer showcasing the latest deadly tools players will be able to wield across the new system’s frontier. Although concrete details are still few and far between, developer commentary has revealed a handful of weapons that hint at more unorthodox and chaotic fun in the sequel. With that in mind, here is a closer look at every gun revealed so far and what it might mean for the combat in The Outer Worlds 2.
The Outer Worlds 2's Most Outrageous Build May Already Be Clear
According to The Outer Worlds 2's developers, there could be a particularly promising build for those seeking an unconventional playstyle.
The Outer Worlds 2's New Outlook on Gunplay Could Be Promising
Lead Systems Designer Kyle Koenig and Design Director Matt Singh have confirmed that The Outer Worlds 2 will feature new and improved gunplay, as well as a revamped weapon modding system. The aim is to build the ideal gunplay experience in their upcoming RPG title, creating unique recoil, reload animations, spread patterns, and incorporating spray and mobility to make the guns feel distinct and satisfying.
The Pop-Up Gun Has A Variety Of Use Cases
The Pop-Up Gun fires advertisement drones during combat as opposed to bullets, which can serve a variety of uses. These drones play commercials and corporate slogans for The Outer Worlds 2's corporations at the enemies once activated, distracting them and allowing players to get a clear shot with a different weapon. Reloading the Pop-Up Gun also activates a mechanic that detonates activated drones. These drones can be utilized as mobile mines or traps to distract and swiftly eliminate a horde of enemies.
The Big Bang Destroys Everything In Its Path
Inspired by the BFG from the Doom games, the Big Bang is a cyberpunk science weapon powered by a unique ammo type called arc gas. This ammo is exceedingly rare and can only be obtained by interacting with spacetime rifts. Given the ammo rarity, players will have to be mindful when using the weapon.
As the name implies, the Big Bang shoots out cosmic energy in the form of rifts, which instantly obliterates anything in its path. The one drawback to the weapon is that it significantly reduces mobility, and even this can be offset due to its synergy with throwables. The returning gloop throwable, for instance, can bunch up a couple of enemies together in the air – perfect sitting ducks for a rift energy shot from a Big Bang.
The Bullet Blender Is Shaping Up to Be the Ideal Modern SMG
With The Outer Worlds 2, Obsidian Entertainment is bringing more ammo types, and the perfect SMG to go with it. The Bullet Blender uses ammo directly from the inventory, eliminating the need to reload the weapon. As a boost, it can also use all weapon-specific ammo types in the game – and it has animation changes to reflect the ammo type being used at any point in time. Despite the numerous tactical advantages, the use of the Bullet Blender will need to be intentional, as its rapid fire rate is rather resource-intensive.
The Plasma Pistol Is A High Damage Handgun With A Unique Mechanic
By default, The Outer Worlds 2's Plasma Pistol is a regular handgun that shoots high-damage bolts of plasma at singular enemies. However, the developers incorporated a cheeky charge mechanic that lights up bulbs as the pistol charge increases. If players release the charge button right as all the bulbs light up, the pistol will gain an increase in damage and plasma bolt count. The mechanic is meant to serve as a fun and rewarding gimmick that players can engage in during combat.
The Planet Killer Is Second Only To The Big Bang In Damage
The Planet Killer is a heavy weapon that utilizes a unique hand-crank animation for reloads. When fully charged, the planet killer is only second to the Big Bang in terms of damage output in a single shot. However, it takes a long time to charge up for a shot and reload. Combined with the sound it generates when fired, which instantly reveals the player's location and limited mobility, players will have to pick and choose the best time to unleash this behemoth of a weapon.
