The Outer Worlds 2 has reportedly crossed the development finish line, "going gold," and revealing its file size via Xbox pre-loads in the process. Sequel to developer Obsidian Entertainment's 2019 sci-fi RPG, The Outer Worlds 2 looks to improve on the original's gunplay as it takes players to a new corporate-owned star system named Arcadia. The original Outer Worlds game received a lot of praise and even became nominated for 2019's Game of the Year at The Game Awards, which has led to a ton of excitement surrounding its now imminent sequel.
2025 has arguably been the biggest year in Obsidian Entertainment's storied 22-year history. The acclaimed role-playing studio released its first big AAA fantasy RPG, Avowed, in February, which enjoyed positive reception as part of the studios' beloved Pillars of Eternity universe. Then, during Xbox's June showcase, Obsidian shocked the Xbox world by announcing the sequel to its hugely popular Honey, I Shrunk the Kids-inspired survival RPG Grounded, which entered early access later that month, on June 29. Now, after a long four-year wait since its E3 2021 reveal, The Outer Worlds 2 is just mere weeks away and will impressively serve as the cherry on top of an astounding three-title year for Obsidian.

The Outer Worlds 2 Goes Gold and Is Available for Pre-Load
With just three weeks left to go until the game's release date, several trusted industry reporters, such as Klobrille and HazzadorGamin on Twitter, have claimed that The Outer Worlds 2 has "gone gold," meaning that Obsidian has wrapped development and is preparing to ship out The Outer Worlds 2 on its October 29 release day. The sci-fi RPG sequel has also gone live for pre-loading on Xbox consoles, revealing the game's 80 GB file size, which is roughly double that of the original Outer Worlds.
It's important to note that The Outer Worlds 2's pre-load file size of 80 GB is without any day-one patches or updates, so the number could end up increasing in the days following the game's release. Nevertheless, the game's size is right in-line with most other AAA RPGs of similar ilk this generation, some of which tend to exceed 100 GB. The Outer Worlds 2 was initially going to be a digital-only release for Xbox gamers, with physical buyers being given the "code in a box" treatment. With much fan pushback, especially after learning the PlayStation 5's physical version of the game includes a real disc, Xbox altered its Outer Worlds 2 rollout to Series X and S gamers, providing fans with an actual disc in the box.
As a first-party Xbox release, The Outer Worlds 2 will also be available day one on Xbox Game Pass. The popular gaming subscription service recently underwent a controversial price hike to its Ultimate tier, cranking its monthly asking price up to $30. It's this tier alone that will net Game Pass subscribers access to The Outer Worlds 2 when it releases on October 29.
