The trailer for the HBO Max period series, Our Flag Means Death, guarantees action, comedy, and epic swashbuckling action for this show. Starring Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle's Rhys Darby, the HBO original is semi-based on the story of Stede Bonnet, a wealthy nobleman who abandons his life to fulfill the dream of becoming a pirate.

Created by David Jenkins, the logline for the HBO Max show reads, “Struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Stede’s fortunes change after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard. Stede and crew attempt to get their ship together and survive life on the high seas.” With the promise of sword fights, riots, and extravagant costumes, there is undoubtedly plenty to look forward to from this show, and the newly released Our Flag Means Death trailer leaves little to the imagination.

Set to Heart's "Crazy on You," the Our Flag Means Death trailer portrays the hilarious contrast between the naturally poised aristocrat, Stede, and the roughened pirates. While the former privileged man is besotted with the idea of becoming a pirate, he struggles with letting go of his habits and adapting to the ways of life sailing the seas. Nevertheless, Stede’s efforts to fit into his new existence provides hilarious moments as he attempts to deal with simple tasks like climbing the rope onto the ship, or threatening situations such as having a knife held to his throat. Despite this, the timid gentleman appears to give nothing less than his complete dedication to integrating into the pirate lifestyle, making the character one to be championed rather than disparaged. Over the course of the pirate comedy series, it will be interesting to see the development of Stede from a bumbling novice to a respected crew mate.

Alongside Darby, Our Flag Means Death co-stars Oscar-winning director, Taika Waititi as the agonizing Captain Blackbeard. Waititi, who also stands as an executive producer for the show, directed the pilot episode back in June last year following the completion of his upcoming Marvel Studios film, Thor: Love and Thunder, set to be released in July. Further to this, other members of the cast include Nathan Foad, Kristian Nairn and comedian Leslie Jones.

Our Flag Means Death was given a straight order by HBO Max in September 2020. Following the airing of the shows first three episodes in early March, three more will premiere on March 10, followed by two each week on March 17 and 24.

With so much promise of thrill and adventure, it is no surprise that there is an enthusiastic buzz surrounding the release of Our Flag Means Death. With the debut date less than a month away, people have a lot to be excited about.
