Summary

  • The original 1996 Resident Evil has been re-released on PC through GOG for just $9.99.
  • Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis are on the way as well.
  • All three games can be purchased individually, but they are also available as a $24.99 bundle.

The original Resident Evil game has been released on PC through GOG, and there are plans to bring the original Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis to the platform as well. While the HD remaster of the Resident Evil 1 remake has been readily available on modern platforms, it's been trickier to relive the OG Resident Evil.

The Director's Cut version of the original Resident Evil game has made its way to PS4 and PS5 through PS Plus Premium, but otherwise the game has been unavailable on most modern gaming platforms. That changes now with Resident Evil's debut on GOG, giving survival-horror fans the chance to relive the classic, DRM-free with some "quality of life improvements."

PC gamers can buy the original 1996 Resident Evil through GOG right now for just $9.99. It includes four localizations, new rendering options, full support for modern controllers, and more. This re-released version of Resident Evil is otherwise a replica of what the game was like when it released in 1996, meaning it doesn't include the extra content that was included in the Director's Cut version. Still, it's great to see the original Resident Evil game make a comeback, and hopefully, Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis aren't too far behind. There's also the option to buy all three games in a bundle for $24.99, so anyone that chooses to go that route can enjoy a slight discount.

Resident Evil is Available Now on GOG

For those who are somehow unfamiliar with the game, the original Resident Evil coined the phrase "survival-horror" and helped innovate the genre. Set in the infamous Spencer Mansion, the game blends horror action with puzzle solving as players fight the horrific monstrosities prowling the estate and try to unravel the mystery behind their origin.

Horror fans can keep their fingers crossed that Capcom bringing the original Resident Evil trilogy to GOG is just the start of the company's plans for the classic games. While nothing has been announced, there is some hope that the OG Resident Evil games could be coming to other platforms in the near future as well. After all, Capcom has a long history of re-releasing its games on as many systems as possible, especially the Resident Evil games, and so one has to imagine that the classics coming to consoles and other PC platforms, like Steam, is just a matter of time.

While the original Resident Evil trilogy could potentially make its way elsewhere at some point, for now, it's only available through GOG. Survival-horror fans are free to check it out while they wait for Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis to eventually make their debuts.
