Two weeks after the second season of Only Murders in the Building began to air on Hulu, the streaming service already plans to have its next season lined up and ready to go.
Hulu has officially renewed the popular murder mystery series for a third season, and they could not be more excited to see what happens next for our three main Only Murders in the Building characters. This is far from a surprise seeing how Hulu has said that the show was the service's most-watched comedy (they don't have any statistical evidence to back that up), so of course, they want more.
Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment president Craig Erwich gushed about the series, from the showrunners to the actors themselves for the work that they've put in to make the show as good and popular as it is. “Only Murders in the Building is the true crown jewel of our slate. Its appeal across generations, the intersection of humor and heart, and its truly original approach are a hallmark of and testament to Dan [Fogelman], John [Hoffman], Steve, Marty and Selena’s work,” Erwich said in a statement. “We are grateful to be able to continue telling the stories of Charles, Oliver, and Mabel to viewers that have consistently shown us they crave more of this story.”
In a way, this announcement sadly somewhat spoils that the three main characters will be alive and well when Only Murders in the Building season 2 ends, which is what the audience expects to happen but wouldn't have known for sure until the show's renewal was announced. That, however, does not spoil whether any of them go to prison after being framed for the murder of Bunny, which they're currently trying to get themselves out of. It also brings intrigue to what the next mystery will be about, considering that the second mystery currently being explored in season 2 had been hinted at from the very beginning of season 1.
It makes all the sense in the world that Hulu wants Only Murders in the Building to continue. The show appeals to all ages because of the old comedy veterans Steve Martin and Martin Short who entice the older generation to tune in and the young starlet Selena Gomez who attracts a younger generation to watch the show too. Doing so makes it so that both generations can collide and interact with one another, using the intellect they have from their eras to do one of their mutual hobbies - solving mysteries.
What also makes the show so appealing is seeing Martin, Short, and Gomez all do things out of their comfort zones. Before the show aired, both Martin and Short did comedies that didn't have much mystery to them. Of course, Martin starred in The Spanish Prisoner, but that movie is not viewed as a comedy. Gomez was a Disney child star turned mega-pop star known more for her music career than her acting career. This is easily her most popular show since Wizards of Waverly Place. The project in general is just so different for everyone, and that's why it's been so popular, and why Hulu wants more.
Only Murders in the Building can currently be streamed on Hulu.
