Capcom unveiled a new Onimusha: Way of the Samurai trailer during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025. Onimusha: Way of the Samurai will be released for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC next year, and its gameplay looks brutal and dark in the new trailer.

The Onimusha franchise started in 2001, spawning a few sequels and spin-offs. However, the latest mainline entry in the series was Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, released in 2006. After Dawn of Dreams, Capcom has only released remasters, a browser-based game, and a VR title. That was until the announcement of Onimusha: Way of the Sword at The Game Awards last year, which marked an interesting moment for the franchise.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword Gameplay Trailer

Capcom unveiled a short, brutal gameplay trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Samurai during Gamescom. In it, it’s possible to see protagonist Miyamoto Musashi fighting different monsters in a corrupted version of Kyoto during the Edo period. The highlight of the trailer is a boss fight, which sees the protagonist fighting a huge monster that attacks with its tail and has spikes all over its body. During combat, Miyamoto cuts enemies with decisive strikes, parries attacks, and uses different weapons like a bow and a double-sided spear, showcasing some versatile gameplay.

The latest trailer resonates with what producer Akihito Kadowaki revealed about the three core aspects of Onimusha: Way of the Samurai earlier this year. At the time, he explained that Capcom was focused on creating a “beautifully eerie” depiction of the Kyoto setting, ultimate swordfighting action, and compelling characters.

When released, Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s main story will take around 20 hours to finish, likely not counting all the possible side content available for gamers. The title will not be an open-world experience, as gamers will progress through stages, which will be filled with enemies to fight and some puzzles to solve, changing the adventure’s pace.

The developers have also revealed previously that Onimusha: Way of the Sword won't be impossibly difficult like some other popular action titles, likely trying to distance itself from Souls-like games and find its own identity. According to Capcom, the goal is to create challenging, “thrilling sword fights” that will give players the satisfaction of slaying their enemies. Hopefully, Onimusha: Way of the Sword will provide a fresh, action-packed experience for gamers just like the one seen in the trailers so far.
