In 2018, Capcom released a remaster of Onimusha: Warlords. 7 years later, Capcom is releasing a remaster of Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny in May, with a brand new entry (Onimusha: Way of the Sword) coming next year. The original Onimusha 2 released in 2002 as the first game ever directed by Motohide Eshiro, and Capcom brought him back into the role for its remaster. His main role at Capcom is as a producer, having worked on games in the Ace Attorney series, Okamiden, and DMC: Devil May Cry.
The Best War Games recently visited the Capcom office in San Francisco to speak with Motohide Eshiro (via translator) about this remaster of Onimusha 2 and the future of the franchise. As he revealed, Onimusha 2 was always planned after Onimusha: Warlords, but circumstances and timing saw the team split up to work on other projects. Onimusha: Way of the Sword being in the works was the reason for the team uniting once more to tackle Onimusha 2. Of course, with this remaster and a new game on the way, many fans may be curious if remasters of Onimusha 3: Demon Siege and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams are on the table.
Could Onimusha 3 and Dawn of Dreams Remasters Happen?
It's worth noting that he did not work on these two titles, nor are his words any sort of confirmation or tease. They come from Eshiro as a fan of the franchise. When asked if he thought these Onimusha remasters were possible, he said,
"He does personally hope that those titles will come back again some day as a remaster or in any form, so that fans will be able to play the game again on modern consoles. He’d be happy to see them somewhere, someday in the future."
Expanding the World of Onimusha
Eshiro is, of course, not the only one who hopes to see this happen. Not only is a significant portion of the fanbase interested in an Onimusha revival, but Onimusha 3 actor Jean Reno has also indicated his willingness to reprise the role of Jacques Blanc, the first Westerner to wield Oni Power. We also asked what stands out to him throughout Onimush a's history, from working on Onimusha 2 in the early 2000s, from working on Onimusha 2's remaster in 2025, and from seeing what's coming with Onimusha: Way of Sword. To him, it's all about growing the world of Onimusha, literally and supernaturally, while also adding more ways for players to engage with the series:
"Over this history of more than 20 years, it’s all been about expanding the world of Onimusha, adding fresh new gameplay, more action, and more features to the games, so that players can enjoy a variety of aspects of the Onimusha series. There is going to be Onimusha: Way of the Sword released next year, but he personally hopes that if there are any more upcoming Onimusha games, there will be more and more expansion of the world. He wants more and more players to enjoy the game, so yeah, he hopes that the world of Onimusha will continue to expand more in the future."
It remains to be seen how the world of Onimusha continues to expand, but with the recent remasters giving players new ways to experience the games and Onimusha: Way of the Sword focusing on compelling characters, a Kyoto setting, and advancing the franchise's swordplay, the franchise's horizons have certainly grown over the past 20+ years.
