There is no shortage of incredible armaments throughout the One Piece story. Some of the greatest and most important characters in the history of the series have carried equally legendary weapons that have accompanied them on their journeys. These are graded into 'Meito', which are essentially the strongest and most notable weapons in the entire story.
However, even among the Meito, there are a few that stand atop all the others which are known as the Supreme Grade Weapons. These are the most powerful and durable armaments in the entire series, but despite their stature, there are some Great Grade Weapons that can stand shoulder to shoulder with them as some of the greatest in all of One Piece, chief among these being a legendary blade of Wano; Enma.

In the world of One Piece, there are very few weapons that have as legendary of a status and story as Enma. Forged decades before the current era of the story by the legendary blacksmith Shimotsuki Kouzaburou, Enma was one of two Great Grade Weapons that were created together which Kouzaburou considered to be his greatest work, the other being Ame no Habakiri.
Due to the inherent properties and strength of the swords, none were ever able to wield them due to how taxing they were to control. However, this all changed when a young Kozuki Oden eventually claimed them for himself, proving to be the only one strong and capable with Haki enough to use them properly. From here, these weapons eventually became his main tools of fighting and earned a reputation as legendary as that of Oden himself, accompanying him to Whitebeard and Roger's crews and then, to the end of the world.
Upon his return to Wano after many years, Oden saw that the country had been taken over by Kaido, whom he eventually dueled with. Due to the legendary strength of Oden and the incredible quality of his swords, he was able to swiftly defeat Kaido and gave him the only lasting wounds that remain on his body to this day. Enma and Ame no Habakiri proved to be the only weapons capable of scarring the world's strongest creature. After Oden was tricked and defeated, both swords were given to his wife, Kozuki Toki.
Toki would eventually save each of the weapons to be given to her children, with Enma being given to Hyori and Ame no Habakiri being left for Momonosuke. For around 20 years, both weapons saw no user until the Wano arc rolled around, where Enma was eventually entrusted to Roronoa Zoro by Hyori. Upon returning Shusui to Wano, Zoro was given an almost equally legendary blade to replace it.
One Piece: How The Ancient Weapons Will Shape The Final Saga
The Ancient Weapons remain one of the biggest mysteries in One Piece, but here's how they can be important in the Final Saga!
Enma's Properties And Likely Future In The Final War
What Makes This Weapon So Strong?
- Enma has a unique ability that has to do with Haki.
- It will also likely get even stronger in the future.
Of course, being a Great Grade Blade, Enma's quality is among the greatest of all the swords in the One Piece world, since Shimotsuki Kouzaburou is a legendary blacksmith who remembers it as the greatest weapon he has ever made, which is quite something considering he also made the Wado Ichimonji. By this metric alone, Enma vastly outscales and outperforms 99% of the weapons of One Piece, only truly being beaten by the Supreme Grades.
However, more than this, it has a special ability that has currently not been seen in any other weapon. This inherent property allows it to draw out the Haki of its user, making even regular strikes from it lethal and far more powerful than they could possibly be otherwise. This can be seen when Zoro cut off an entire part of Wano's coastline despite not even meaning to, which also goes to highlight the greatest caveat to using this weapon, which is its unruly nature.
The sword that could cut down the heavens themselves, Ame no Habakiri, and the sword that could cut through the depths of hell itself, Enma!
Enma can draw out its user's Haki by itself without them even allowing it to, which is quite dangerous since drawing out too much can kill them, ensuring that only the strongest and most capable Haki users can wield it. Moreover, being a Great Grade Blade, Enma is also considerably heavier than a regular sword, which just increases its destructive and difficult-to-wield nature.
As for its future, it was heavily implied that Enma is well on its way to becoming a Black Blade, which is essentially what happens when a sword is imbued with a lot of Haki over time, making it so that it's permanently stained with it. Naturally, this makes the weapon far more powerful, allowing it to use Haki's strength and properties without needing to be imbued with it. Seeing how it was wielded by Oden and now Zoro, this could very well be in the cards regarding its future. Plus, it's said that a weapon's grade can also be increased the more it's used and the stronger it gets, so it's likely that Enma will become a Supreme Grade before One Piece ends.
