Summary

  • Some Devil Fruits in One Piece are detrimental for pirates due to a lack of combat potential.
  • Devil Fruits like Turtle-Turtle Fruit offer defense but sacrifice offense and mobility.
  • Other ineffective Devil Fruits for pirates include the Cook-Cook Fruit, which lacks purpose and creativity.

Devil Fruits are a large contribution to the chaos in the pirate world of One Piece. Although the tradeoff is a glaring disadvantage for pirates, very few have climbed the ranks and achieved unbelievable bounties without a Devil Fruit.

However, there are certain Devil Fruits in the One Piece series that would be detrimental rather than beneficial for a pirate. Some of them may be useful in certain circumstances but have no business in the hands of a pirate aiming for greatness. Others have a poor technicality for power exchange rate and would hinder pirates rather than aid them.

1 Guru Guru no Mi

Spin-Spin Fruit

  • Anime Debut (Usage): Episode 618
  • Current User: Buffalo

The Guru Guru no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows its user to transform parts of themselves into propellers that spin fast enough to enable flight. In itself, it is not a useless ability, as traveling long distances would be a breeze for the average user. The same can not be said for a pirate.

The ability does not have much combat potential, which is a massive requirement for pirates. If a pirate were to encounter someone strong enough to stop the propellers, the ability is as good as useless. It appears not to take too much, as Kyros, a non-Devil Fruit user, was able to stop it in the series.

2 Kame Kame no Mi

Turtle-Turtle Fruit

  • Anime Debut (Usage): Episode 572
  • Current User: Pekoms

The Kame Kame no Mi is a Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows the user to transform into a turtle or turtle hybrid. The turtle’s shell is impenetrable, making its user impervious to any physical attack. While this fruit maxes out on the defense state, the sacrifice of offense and mobility is unfavorable.

Along with its shell comes the standard turtle pace, one that leaves its user vulnerable in so many ways. Pairing this major weakness with the seawater that pirates are often surrounded by would be fatal for the pirate user. Abduction and imprisonment would be even easier, especially by marines.

3 Gocha Gocha no Mi

Pile-Pile Fruit

  • Anime Debut (Usage): Episode 875
  • Current User: Charlotte Newshi

While the technicalities behind this fruit are not fully known, the unknown does not necessarily change the ineffectiveness of this fruit for a pirate. It is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows the user to merge different people with themselves. This essentially sums up the ability.

Brûlée One Piece Child
One Piece: Brûlée Didn’t Deserve To Suffer In Whole Cake Island

Although she was a minor antagonist in Whole Cake Island, Brûlée didn't deserve to suffer in One Piece.

The need for allies to make this ability useful already places it in a bad spot. It is unknown if the user requires consent to merge or not, putting it at a much lower position in the case of the former. It also does not enhance, add to, or protect the user in any way. It only adds up the strength of each individual in the fusion.

4 Hito Hito no Mi

Human-Human Fruit

  • Anime Debut (Usage): Episode 83
  • Current User: Tony Tony Chopper

The Hito Hito no Mi is a Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows its user to transform into a human or human-hybrid. In comparison to its variations, such as the models Nika and Daibutsu, it pales in terms of advantages. If consumed by a human, those advantages are nonexistent.

The fruit offers humans no ability whatsoever. Oda even jokes that humans would likely be more human if they ate it. Considering the majority of pirates are already humans, there are very few that this fruit would favor. Paired with the standard weakness of Devil Fruits, this is more of a loss than anything for human pirates.

5 Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Albatross

Bird-Bird Fruit, Model: Albatross

  • Anime Debut (Usage): Episode 830
  • Current User: Morgans

Yet another fruit that's severely lacking in contrast to the other types, this model of the Tori Tori no Mi has next to no advantage, pirate or not. This Zoan-type Devil Fruit allows its consumer to transform into an albatross or albatross hybrid.

Knowing that albatrosses are flying birds, one would expect this bird-type Devil Fruit to at least grant flight as an ability. Sadly, it falls short of its only expectation. A pirate is not making it far with a Devil Fruit that transforms them into a flightless bird and nothing else.

6 Jake Jake no Mi Omo

Jacket-Jacket Fruit

  • Anime Debut (Usage): Episode 645
  • Current User: Kelly Funk

The Jake Jake no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that transforms its user into a full-body jacket that can be worn by others. When worn, the user would be able to control the strength and abilities of the wearer. This makes it a perfect Devil Fruit for characters with skill and technique but no raw power.

Doflamingo is widely regarded as the greatest villain in One Piece, so let's go over his fate following the events of Punk Hazard!

However, the dependency of the fruit on a wearer makes it impractical for a pirate. Without a wearer, the user would be completely vulnerable, as they appear to be immobile upon transformation. A weak wearer would also nullify the purpose of the ability, as there would be nothing to gain in the merger.

7 Kuku Kuku no Mi

Cook-Cook Fruit

  • Anime Debut (Usage): Episode 832
  • Current User: Streusen

The Kuku Kuku no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that grants its user the ability to turn objects into food. Although the food produced can provide nutrients, it lacks taste. In the hands of a regular character, this fruit would be a chef's kiss, as food would never be an issue.

Pirates, on the other hand, do not have much need for it. While it does help to reduce damage by transforming dangerous objects into food, there is not much else it can do, even with creativity in the mix. The Grand Line would most likely be foreign land to a pirate with this ability.

8 Bata Bata No Mi

Butter-Butter Fruit

  • Anime Debut (Usage): Episode 8
  • Current User: Charlotte Galette

The Bata Bata no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows its user to create and control butter, making them a butter human. Also, the butter created by this fruit is sticky and gooey in a semi-liquid form and can be used to hold opponents captive.

While it may have advantages, it is just butter at the end of the day. Sure, it can trap opponents and make them slip and fall, but there is hardly anything else. Even with skill and imagination, turning butter into a weapon would be tough work and all the more useless for a pirate.
