One Piece is a fantastical series filled with many different characters from all sorts of whacky and imaginative backgrounds. Though most of the people in the series are humans in one capacity or another, there are a few races that all look humanoid but are completely different in terms of their physiology, powers and abilities. One of the most elusive, and powerful, of these races is called the Lunarians.
Though not exactly a focal point of the overall One Piece story, Lunarians have quite an important role in the world and their origins are some of the most fascinating in the entire franchise. There are not many survivors of this race left, but the few that have been seen are important characters, with one notable example being one of the strongest characters ever introduced into the series!
A Beginner's Guide to One Piece
One Piece is one of the greatest stories ever told, but getting into the franchise can be quite daunting for beginners, so here's something to help.
The Mysterious History of the Lunarians
The Lunarians are a people that supposedly once lived on the moon, owing to their name. After coming down from there and onto the planet, they resided on top of the Red Line in a tribe, leading to them being considered as Gods across the globe. This is told by Whitebeard during the Wano Country arc, where he explains that real Gods did exist in the world and were extremely powerful.
However, at some point after their descension from the moon, the Lunarians eventually went extinct, with only one surviving natural member of their race remaining during the current setting of the story. This was likely due to the World Government's attempt to destroy the Ancient Kingdom and all of its allies, which led to the eradication of the entire Lunarian race. The World Government, to this day, continues to hunt down members of the race, as was revealed when King first showed his face, prompting members of his own crew to state that the price for reporting on him to the World Government is 100 million berries.
Lunarians Have Distinct Appearance
Lunarians have a very striking and unique appearance when compared to other races and people of the One Piece world. The first thing that stands out about them is their massive wings. These wings make them sort of similar to some other races like the Skypeians and the Shandians, but where they differ is in their size, color and utilization.
Lunarians' wings are bigger than those belonging to these other races and give them quite an imposing figure and are also jet black in color, adding to their overall uniqueness. Other than that, these wings also enable Lunarians to fly, something that the other winged races cannot do. They even have white hair and brown skin, but most notable, however, is the giant flame on their backs. This flame is situated between their wings, always burning, and owes to their innate powers.
Lunarians Have Unique Powers & Abilities
Since the race has that massive, everlasting fire present on their backs, they can emit fire from their bodies and control it to a great extent. These can either be from plain fire-based attacks to covering their basic physical attacks with fire to deal extra damage to their opponents. Additionally, their unique physiology gives them tremendous physical strength, vitality and speed and their bodies are naturally incredibly resilient, leading to them being invulnerable to most attacks and being able to survive in any environment.
A Lunarian can even temporarily put out the fire on their back to get a massive speed boost, though doing this brings down their durability. This durability is key to their strength, as even many attacks that are boosted with Haki seem to do no damage to them. However, their main offensive abilities remain their fire manipulation. The versatility that Lunarians show with these flames is incredible, as they can shoot blasts of fire, can seemingly spawn magma or even make gigantic constructs of fire, as seen in King's battle with Zoro.
One Piece: The Strength Of The Celestial Dragons, Explained
The strength of the Celestial Dragons is underestimated in One Piece.
King's flight is also an instrumental aspect of his repertoire as it gives his move set a verticality that very few others in One Piece enjoy. He can fight and move freely without much stamina exertion, something that is made all the more impressive when he is seen to take successive powerful attacks without losing any blood and even transforming into a giant Pterodactyl.
Are the Lunarians Truly Extinct?
During King's imprisonment at Punk Hazard, Dr. Vegapunk had taken samples from his body, which he then used to create a mysterious race called the Seraphim, who were artificial cyborgs. These Seraphim were modeled after the 7 Warlords of the Sea and, due to being created by Kings Lineage Factor, they possess many of the abilities that are unique to the Lunarian race.
Though King is stated as the last natural Lunarian, the Seraphim aren't truly considered to be natural members of the race like he is. However, they still possess many of the signature marks of the race, such as incredible durability, black wings and a flame on their backs. However, their flames aren't as easily put out as those of the Lunarians, making them tougher for their enemies to fight.
One Piece can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Funimation.
