Summary

  • Oda avoids including mothers in adventures to emphasize the starting point of an adventure.
  • Luffy's mother remains a mystery in One Piece, with various fan theories but no concrete answers.
  • Despite fan curiosity, Oda may not reveal Luffy's biological mother, as her role may not live up to complex theories.

One Piece is a massive story full of amazingly constructed world-building that delves deep into the small details of the world the Luffy and the Straw Hats live in. From well-constructed government systems to minuscule characters being given unreasonable levels of depth, many fans applaud One Piece for being a series that gets the tiny details right. However, with that being said, there are some tiny details that Oda leaves out of the story, due to a lack of relevance to the overall plot, that some fans believe to be more important than Oda lets on.

One such detail concerns Luffy’s mother in One Piece, a character that still hasn’t been officially revealed after over 25 years of publication. Of course, with Dragon, Luffy’s father, being a largely important figure in the One Piece world, some eager members of the community have wondered if Luffy’s mother will share a similar level of importance to the world as a whole. Sadly, Oda doesn’t seem too interested in telling the story of Luffy’s mother, or even introducing her to One Piece in general.

Oda Chooses Not To Include Mothers In His Stories Too Often

Mothers Are The Starting Place For Adventures

First and foremost, when it comes to having mothers, Oda tends to keep maternal figures as far away from adventures as possible. Most of the time, with characters like Usopp, Sanji, Nami, and many others, Oda chooses to have the mother die for emotional value in the saddest One Piece backstories. At the same time, Oda also chooses to not include the details of mothers out of backstories, like with Luffy and Zoro, as well, glossing over who they are very briefly. This is due to the fact that Oda views leaving the comfort that a mother provides as the starting point of an adventure, and including a mother may get in the way of the quest of the Straw Hat Pirates.

While this explains why Luffy’s mother hasn’t been featured in One Piece, Oda has been asked a few questions about the mysterious figure in the past, though he often chooses to avoid the questions rather than answering them. In one question, he describes Luffy’s mother in One Piece as being likely alive and extremely tough, arguably someone who would be perfect for raising Luffy. However, many fans have noted that he is likely talking about Curly Dadan, the person who actually raised Luffy, and is arguably his one and only mother.

  • Some Fans Believe That Luffy's Mom Was In The Story Before
  • Plenty Of Theories About Luffy's Mother Exist

Regarding Luffy’s biological mother, there are rumors circulating in the community that she has appeared in the story before, though the author of One Piece, Oda, has yet to identify which character it is. Sadly, these only seem to be rumors with no legitimate sources backing them up. However, if it is true, many fans have been piecing together a few theories that may pinpoint who Luffy’s biological mother actually is.

Some popular theories in the One Piece community regarding Luffy’s mother often revolve around a few key figures in Luffy’s life. Firstly, some fans believe that Luffy’s mom could have been a normal citizen who was killed by a Celestial Dragon, igniting Dragon’s hatred of the World Government. Another theory claims that Luffy’s mom herself may have been a Celestial Dragon, losing or abandoning Luffy as a young infant, similar to Shanks. Finally, a bizarre theory even suggests that Crocodile could be Luffy’s mom in One Piece, who used Ivankov’s Hormone Devil Fruit to become a woman.

There May Be No Place For Luffy's Biological Mother In One Piece

She May Be Simple Compared To Complex Fan Theories

Still, with how many theories are circulating, and how wildly different these theories are, it’s safe to say that the community knows nothing about Luffy’s mother. Overall, it doesn’t seem likely that the story of Luffy’s mother has no place in the world of One Piece. Plus, even if she is introduced, her role in the series will probably fail to live up to the complex theories that fans have constructed surrounding her.

Despite this, in the end, although fans are curious to learn more about Luffy’s mother, this may very well remain one of One Piece’s greatest mysteries. Though fans may want to learn more about Luffy’s biological mother, her story doesn’t seem like one Oda is interested in telling. Plus, fans already know who Luffy’s real mother is anyway; Dadan, the person who spent countless years raising Luffy, molding him into the adventurous pirate he is today in One Piece.
