Although weapons are an essential part of each character in the world of One Piece, when it comes to Devil Fruit users with weapons, oftentimes they just get in the way of their more powerful Devil Fruit ability. For example, though Luffy may find some level of extra firepower when learning to wield swords with the Human-Human Fruit Model: Nika, using any sort of weapon would result in diminishing returns. However, of course, there are plenty of exceptions to this rule, with Devil Fruit users who combine weapons with Devil Fruit abilities to great effect, mainly with characters like Issho, and of course, the late captain of the Whitebeard Pirates, Whitebeard.
As many fans know, Whitebeard’s weapon, Murakumogiri, is one of the most essential blades in the entire series. Belonging to the 12 Supreme Grade Blades, Murakumogiri is a legendary weapon in the world of One Piece that was used to great effect by Whitebeard himself. Additionally, Murakumogiri holds a special place even among the 12 Supreme Grade Blades, being the only one of these weapons revealed so far that isn’t a sword.
One Piece: 9 Best Underdogs, Ranked
Despite having the odds stacked against them, these One Piece underdogs overcame the adversity to grow and develop as characters.
What Is Whitebeard's Murakumogiri?
A Weapon Belonging To 12 Supreme Blades
The 12 Supreme Grade Blades are a group of the 12 high-quality and most powerful blades in the entire world of One Piece. When it comes to weaponry, these blades have enormous physical capabilities and are able to allow their wielder to perform extreme feats of strength. So far, only five of these blades have been revealed: Mihawk’s Yoru, Whitebeard’s Murakumogiri, Roger’s Ace, Issho’s Yakuza Kasen, and Shodai Kitetsu.
It's name is "Murakumogiri (Cloud Cutter)". It's a Supreme Grade Blade/Sword. - Oda revealing the name of Whitebeard's blade
Although the rest of the Supreme Grade Blades revealed so far are swords, Whitebeard’s Murakumogiri is actually more closely related to a naginata than anything else. This style of weapon is a traditional Japanese polearm that has a long pole and a single-edged blade on the end. Whitebeard’s Murakumogiri specifically is a bit more ornate than this, featuring a picture of a snake as decoration, and a striped pattern along the pole of the blade.
The History Of Whitebeard's Murakumogiri
A Perfect Conduit For Whitebeard's Strength
- Whitebeard Has Had His Weapon For Since His Earlier Days
- He Still Has His Weapon After His Death
Although little is known about the exact history of the blade, Whitebeard was shown with Murakumogiri as far back as his early days with One Piece’s Rocks Pirates, long before the start of the series. Of course, he would be shown using this blade when he encountered and clashed with the Roger Pirates, as well as during the Summit War. After his death, the blade was placed on Whitebeard’s grave, where it currently resides to this day.
One Piece Chapter 1143: The Powers Of The Holy Knights
The Holy Knights showcase their devil fruit abilities in One Piece's newest chapter, One Piece 1143.
Out of any weapon in One Piece, Whitebeard’s Murakumogiri is said to be the perfect conduit for all of his abilities. The Supreme Blade is said to be able to withstand and channel Whitebeard’s powerful Quake-Quake Fruit, allowing the former Emperor to enhance the blade with shockwaves. At the same time, the blade also seems to be an ideal weapon for Whitebeard’s impressive strength and Haki, once again, channeling these facets of Whitebeard’s strength with little to no problem. Already, being able to withstand the sheer force of Whitebeard’s strength and the Quake-Quake Fruit is enough to prove just how durable Murakumogiri is.
The Techniques Of Whitebeard's Murakumogiri
A Blade That Can Clash With The Pirate King
At the same time, the blade also possesses impressive offensive capabilities, letting Whitebeard clash with other Supreme Grade Blades like the former Pirate King, Roger’s, Ace. Additionally, his weapon allows him to utilize some fairly impressive techniques, mainly one that involves surrounding the blade of Murakumogiri with quake energy, adding even more to the already impressive strength and range of the blade. Although this attack was initially unnamed, later in a One Piece video game, One Piece: Gigant Battle, the attack was referred to as Naginata Rasetsu.
It'd be a shame if you died here, kid. If you still want to wreak havoc on this sea, bear my name on your back and go wild as much as you like...! Become my son! - Whitebeard to Ace
Although it is sad to see such a legendary One Piece weapon out of commission, leaving it with Whitebeard’s grave is the most respectful send-off Murakumogiri could have. Though there is always the chance the blade could return, especially with Tashigi’s goal of collecting these legendary items, it seems, for the time being, Murakumogiri will remain where it is. However, once One Piece reaches its conclusion, there is always the potential for a side story that explores the importance of Whitebeard and his Supreme Grade Blade, Murakumogiri.
