Summary
- Usopp's pop greens provide unique and diverse abilities, ranging from fire-dousing sprinklers to nature's grenades.
- These Midori Boshi or Green Star attacks show the creativity and versatility Usopp employs in his arsenal.
- Despite being canonically used for non-combat purposes, Usopp's pop greens offer strategic advantages and utility in various situations.
The timeskip has afforded many characters in One Piece, primarily those in the Straw Hat Pirates, access to new abilities that they did not have beforehand. One example is Usopp, who is generally considered the weakest member of the Straw Hat Pirates. Despite his lack of physical strength, Usopp is a fairly intelligent and resourceful character. He uses a mixture of strategy, his sniping skills, and whatever he can find and master to accomplish his goals.
After time spent with Heracles, a warrior and botanist, Usopp came to learn about pop greens, seeds that could rapidly grow into wild plants. Usopp uses his Kuro Kabuto, a small blank slingshot filled with grass, to launch these greens. He came to rely on them for a variety of scenarios and even has a garden aboard the Thousand Sunny so he can continue to grow them for his personal use. This list ranks the pop greens by utility, taking only canon uses into consideration. Potentially stronger or more efficient greens could be hampered purely by how Usopp has attempted to use them. So far, all of these techniques using pop greens have been identified as Midori Boshi, or Green Star, attacks.
One Piece: Best Devil Fruits Not Used For Combat
Despite lacking in direct combat power, these Devil Fruits are still quite useful.
14 Sprinkler
A Fire-Dousing Green
Sprinkler seems to function in a manner identical to the appliance it shares its name with. Physically, it resembles an irrigation sprinkler used for yard care, but Usopp was first shown using it for firefighting. In theory, this green could be useful, but its debut was an exercise in futility, as Usopp could not put out the fire in Onigashima with it alone.
It is likely smaller fires could be contained and extinguished by the plant, or perhaps it could even be used to water Usopp's other greens. Yet, its appearance thus far has only served to showcase what it cannot do.
13 Platanus Shuriken
A Throwing Star Green
This green turns into a leaf resembling the kind seen on a platanus, a genus of tree with star-shaped leaves. These leaves act as throwing stars which can cut an opponent. However, they have only been shown failing, with Usopp not being able to damage Trebol with them. The anime also added a scene in which Usopp tries and fails to attack Kurozumi Kanjuro with such leaves.
One Piece: 10 Most Influential Villains
As far as known entities in the series go, these are the major villains who possess the most influence.
It is possible Usopp could have been able to damage Trebol if not for the thick coat of mucus covering his body. This extension of his Devil Fruit powers tends to cause people to confuse him for a Logia user, which he uses to his advantage as he slips through their attacks.
12 Exploding Pinecones
Nature's Grenades
This green transforms into an ensemble of pinecones that explode after a certain amount of time. It is unclear how strong the resulting explosions are, but Page One came out of them with little reaction. Once again, it is likely that a weaker opponent would have been floored by the impact.
Page One is known for his high resilience. He is one of the Flying Six, making him one of the ten most powerful members of the Beasts Pirates in terms of authority and physical strength as well. Kaido often requires this of his most senior subordinates.
11 Rafflesia
Has An Overpowering Stench
Rafflesia gets its name from a real life flower that has been called the "corpse flower" due to its appearance and odor. Usopp used a particularly large one to subdue Hody Jones and some of his underlings with the flower's smell. It succeeded short of stopping Hody himself, who didn't think much of the attack.
10 Trampolia
A Solid Set-Up
Trampolia is a bouncy plant that looks like a large flower with a blue surface. Those atop said surface can be sent upward, from which Usopp can rain more attacks upon them. It is a solid way to throw enemies off, but not much of an attack on its own.
9 Humandrake
Planted Shackles
Humandrakes are greens that pop out of the ground when stepped on, mirroring a superstition that mandrakes shout when pulled out of the ground. Humandrakes that are triggered wrap their roots around the assailant, restraining them. Usopp combined this with Trampolia to make extra sure Daruma wouldn't escape his grasp.
8 Sleep Grass
A Tiresome Flower
Sleep Grass sprouts a flower that can knock those nearby unconscious. Usopp used it to knock out members of the Beasts Pirates. This means it is likely to knock out any low level subordinate and is ideal for when Usopp wants to infiltrate without causing a ruckus.
7 Firework Flowers
A Rainbow Explosion
This green is like an organic sticky bomb that plants explosive flowers on its target. These flowers resemble fireworks when activated and knock down the target. They were able to keep Page One off Komachiyo, albeit stopping short of properly defeating him.
6 Bamboo Javelin
Uproots the Competition
This green plants bamboo that shoots upward and stabs its opponents. It is a viable way to remove a number of weaker foes in a big battle, like Hody's subordinates in the New Fish-Man Pirates. However, it fails if a foe like Page One is strong enough to deal with the bamboo itself.
5 Skull Bomb Grass
An Explosive Plant
True to its name, skull bomb grass sets off an explosion that results in a red skull-shaped cloud. Usopp used it to knock Daruma out of the tunnel system he dug for himself, in order to defeat him. This was the first in a coordinated ensemble of greens designed to knock out Daruma as efficiently as possible.
One Piece: Best Donquixote Doflamingo Quotes
Donquixote Doflamingo's lust for power in One Piece is illustrated in his self-serving and arrogant speaking style.
The Egghead Arc showcases Usopp using an apparently stronger version of this attack, with the number 1000 also being seen in the smoke in the anime. This was likely a gag to signify the 1000th episode of the One Piece anime.
