First Place Yet Again

In a post by X (formerly Twitter) user sandman, a popular name within the community, it was revealed that One Piece had secured the top position in a poll held by a Japanese TV show in Paris. A total of 100 people were asked what manga they liked the best, and One Piece came out on top. The full list can be found below:

  1. One Piece
  2. Naruto
  3. Dragon Ball
  4. Demon Slayer
  5. Attack on Titan
  6. Jujutsu Kaisen
  7. Berserk
  8. Death Note
  9. GTO
  10. Hunter x Hunter

From the list, it is quite apparent that the people who participated in the poll had very diverse tastes, although most series fall in the shonen demographic. Berserk is the only exception. While it is definitely impressive that One Piece won the poll, it is incredible to see that Naruto finished second despite having ended almost a decade ago. GTO, or Great Teacher Onizuka, is by far the most surprising entry on the list. Even though it is a critically acclaimed series, it is remarkable that it finished above other popular series such as Gintama, Kingdom, My Hero Academia, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, etc.

The biggest shock is the absence of Bleach from the list, which is one of the Big 3. Unlike Naruto, the anime for Bleach is still ongoing, making it a jaw-dropper.

One Piece As A Franchise

It Has Taken Over All Sorts Of Medium

One Piece has grown so much in the last ten years, and it has overtaken almost every series in the world. Eiichiro Oda and the other people involved with the franchise have made many efforts to bolster One Piece's popularity in Japan and in the West. One of the biggest projects announced by the top brass was the live action adaptation of One Piece. Given the fact that most live-action adaptations of anime have been disastrous, there was a great degree of skepticism within the fanbase. They were worried that the live-action version of their beloved series would push away potential new fans. Thankfully, it had the opposite effect. One Piece Live Action was a major hit, and it earned the praise of fans and critics alike. The show boasts a solid 8.3 rating on IMDb, which is much higher than most, if not all, other anime live action adaptations. Due to its success, One Piece Live Action was renewed for seasons two and three.

Besides the live action adaptation, the One Piece anime is about to receive a remake, which is being done by Wit Studio. It has animated many popular shows, like Attack on Titan, Spy x Family, Vinland Saga, etc. So, the studio has a great deal of experience handling big projects, which is good news for the fans. In a recent interview, George Wada, the studio president, confirmed that the remake was needed to address two major flaws with the original anime. The first is the ratio. Early One Piece arcs were all done in a ratio of 4:3, which falls well short of the modern standard. Due to this reason, many people have dropped One Piece before giving it a fair chance.

The second shortcoming is the pacing of the original anime. Initially, the episodes adapted a miniscule number of pages per episode, which made them feel long and exhausting. Since there is considerable distance between the manga and the remake, the pacing will be a lot better. The remake will make the series more appealing to the modern audience.

How High Can It Go?

One Piece Can Reach Newer Heights In The Coming Years

One Piece already has multiple projects in the works, and chances are that more announcements will be made on the One Piece Day, which will take place on August 11th and 12th. It is possible that a new One Piece game or a new movie might be announced. Either of these two things would be great, and it will give fans something more to look forward to.

One Piece manga has already sold over 500 million copies, and the number keeps rising every year. With the story in the Final Saga, there is a good chance that the sales will be bolstered further. By the time One Piece manga ends, it would have opened a massive gap, making it impossible for other titles to overtake it.
