This article contains spoilers for One Piece's Elbaf Arc.

Summary

  • Loki is a menacing figure in One Piece's Elbaf Arc.
  • Luffy sympathizes with Loki despite his violent tendencies.
  • Loki and Luffy share qualities like connections to animals and desires for freedom.

Out of any recent character in modern One Piece, it seems like Loki is the one taking the entire community by storm. Even with the reveal of the God’s Knights and Shanks’s twin brother Shamrock, it seems like most of the discussion for the series currently revolves around Loki. With conversations discussing the giant’s allegiances, his morality, and whether he will join the Straw Hat Crew in One Piece or not, it’s hard to avoid conversations that mention Loki when talking to a fan of the series.

Loki’s popularity in the community of One Piece already makes a fair amount of sense, with factors like his mysterious nature and intriguing personality contributing to his success. However, one factor may play a larger role in the fanbase's love of the character: his similarities to Luffy. Although it may not seem obvious at first, Loki possesses many qualities that make him an interesting parallel to the protagonist of One Piece himself, helping him become more likable in the eyes of fans.

Loki Has Been A Menacing Figure In One Piece's Elbaf

Luffy Still Sympathizes With Loki For Some Reason

In the Elbaf Arc of One Piece, Loki is a powerful, yet dangerous trickster of the Giants, unleashing deadly pranks from a young age. This includes things like taming the beasts of Elbaf’s Underworld and sending them to attack villages. However, being the younger Prince of Elbaf, Loki sought power, leading him to claim his father’s Devil Fruit. Before the start of One Piece, supposedly, Loki killed his father and took the Devil Fruit, before he was restrained by Shanks.

This is currently where Loki remains until the modern day of One Piece, being locked away from Giant society and as a potential threat if he is released. In fact, Loki tells Luffy himself that he plans on destroying the world if he were to ever be released, showing how much anger he holds towards the people who locked him away. Eventually, despite the protests from One Piece's New Giant Pirates, Luffy does eventually free Loki, letting him stand for the first time, leading to him immediately attacking the Treasure Tree Adam of Elbaf.

Loki And Luffy Share Many Qualities In One Piece

Both Are Connected To Animals And Desire Freedom

  • Loki And Luffy Both Have Animal Companions
  • They Both Strive For Freedom As Well

Although he may sound incredibly villainous overall, Loki actually possesses a few qualities that make him reminiscent of Luffy in One Piece. Firstly, although he tamed them through more violent means, Loki has a connection with the animals of Elbaf’s Underworld in One Piece. This echoes Luffy’s connections with animals that he often makes, especially during his time skip training. Despite this being a smaller quality, along with Loki’s friendship with Mosa, this may hint that the Giant Prince has a softer side that fans have yet to see.

Next, it seems that Loki’s desire to be free from his chains echoes Luffy’s desires to be free on the open seas in One Piece. Although these are two different situations, Loki’s current imprisonment and desire to be free seems to have struck a chord with the Straw Hat Captain, leading him to free the massive One Piece Giant. With not much happening after his release, besides Loki attacking the tree of Elbaf, fans will have to see if Loki’s need for freedom continues beyond his imprisonment.

Both Loki And Luffy may Be Connected To Nika

Finally, and less obviously, both characters have a somewhat similar personality. Under his violent and harsh exterior, there are many instances in One Piece where Loki feels like Luffy, particularly the fact of him being honest to a fault and often has a jovial and smiling demeanor. These elements, as some fans have theorized, could link him to the Sun God Nika, like Luffy, though paired with his more destructive tendencies, it could be a darker side of the legendary figure of One Piece history.

Is Loki a good guy? - Luffy

In the end, while there are many differences between the characters, like Loki’s violent and destructive tendencies and manipulative personality, at their core, Loki and Luffy in Elbaf share many similarities in One Piece. Although the two haven’t had much time to interact overall, fans are hoping to see more of the duo together to see what other similarities they may have. Until then, fans will have to wait an see whether Loki actually destroys the world of One Piece or not.
