Summary

  • In One Piece, characters like Ace and Oden prove strength doesn't guarantee survival in this dynamic world of pirates.
  • Not even top players like Whitebeard or Gol D. Roger were spared from tragic endings in this brutal pirate saga.
  • Joy Boy stands out as the most powerful character in One Piece's history, with a rebellious spirit that shook the World Government.

One Piece might be included in the shonen demographic, but that does not mean it strictly adheres to themes suited for a younger audience. In fact, it is common to see characters ending up dead after a main event.

However, the death of a character does not undermine their strength. Throughout One Piece, fans have seen some of the strongest characters die. But who was the most powerful individual to have ever lived in One Piece?

Kaido and Big Mom have not officially been declared dead. Therefore, they are excluded from the list.

7 Portgas D. Ace

Cause Of Death: Punched Through The Chest By Akainu

Portgas D. Ace in One Piece

Portgas D. Ace was the Second Division Commander of the Whitebeard Pirates. He joined the crew after Whitebeard defeated him effortlessly. Ace spent many years with the crew and gained the respect of his fellow crewmates. Whitebeard had big plans for Ace, and he wanted to make the latter the King of the Pirates. Unfortunately, both of them died tragically in Marineford.

Ace ate the Mera Mera no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allowed him to create and manipulate fire at will. With this power, Ace defeated a Shichibukai and went on to become one of the Supernovas of his generation. Ace could use all three types of Haki, but he lacked the proficiency to use them at the highest level.

6 Kozuki Oden

Cause Of Death: Shot By Kaido

One Piece Kozuki Oden using his two-sword style

Kozuki Oden is one of the few characters who sailed with the Roger Pirates and the Whitebeard Pirates. Oden joined Whitebeard's group when they crashed onto the shores of Wano, and he stayed with them until he met Roger. Oden was so moved by Roger's words that he decided to travel with him.

Oden's primary purpose was to decipher the Poneglyphs, but he offered much more than that. Oden was a fearsome fighter who had conquered all kinds of enemies in Wano. After he returned from his journey, Oden went head-to-head with Kaido and nearly killed the latter. Kaido only survived because Oden was distracted by Kurozumi Higurashi.

5 Ryuma

Cause Of Death: Natural

One Piece Zombie Ryuma vs Zorro

Shimotsuki Ryuma is the main protagonist of Oda's one-shot manga titled MONSTERS. However, he has been mentioned several times in One Piece, and he even appeared in the Thriller Bark arc, albeit as a zombie.

Shimotsuki Ryuma wielded Shusui, a O-Wazamono grade sword. Ryuma spent years fighting pirates and other foreign forces, preventing them from invading Wano and stealing their resources. Ryuma's swordsmanship was so elite that it earned him the epithet of Sword God. Even Dracule Mihawk was unable to attain the same status as Ryuma.

4 Whitebeard

Cause Of Death: Multiple Injuries, Sickness

One Piece Young Whitebeard in Wano

Edward Newgate, better known as Whitebeard, was a Yonko who also held the title of the world's strongest man. 38 years ago, Whitebeard sailed with the Rocks Pirates and was likely one of the senior members of the crew. After the crew was disbanded, he founded the Whitebeard Pirates.

Whitebeard was armed with the Gura Gura no Mi, which allowed him to create tremors. With such a dangerous Devil Fruit, Whitebeard could decimate any island by causing vicious tsunamis. Whitebeard could also use three types of Haki and had completely mastered at least two of them.

3 Gol D. Roger

Cause Of Death: Executed By The Marines

Gol D. Roger was the first pirate to complete a voyage around the Grand Line. During his travels, Roger had to face the likes of Rocks D. Xebec, Whitebeard, Shiki, etc. Roger managed to prevail and eventually claimed the One Piece.

Roger did not have a Devil Fruit, but he possessed ridiculously strong Haki. His Divine Departure was potent enough to beat Kozuki Oden, an individual who was able to overwhelm Kaido. One of the most important things to keep in mind is that Roger competed with his rivals while he was sick, which would have at least affected his stamina. This makes his accomplishment all the more amazing.

2 Rocks D. Xebec

Cause Of Death: Unknown

Rocks D xebec One Piece

Rocks D. Xebec was the leader of the Rocks Pirates. He was an ambitious man who wanted to topple the World Government and become the sole ruler. Due to his aggressive demeanor, Rocks was considered a dangerous criminal, and many people, including pirates, viewed him as a threat.

It is unclear what kind of abilities Rocks had, but it is safe to assume that his arsenal was filled with strong attacks. According to Sengoku, Rocks was the biggest rival of Gol D. Roger, which implies that he was a cut above Whitebeard. It is also important to remember that Roger had to ally with Garp to take down the Rocks Pirates.

1 Joy Boy

Cause Of Death: Likely Killed By The World Government

Joy Boy Returns One Piece

Following the revelations in the manga, Joy Boy seems by far the strongest character to have ever existed in One Piece. According to Vegapunk, Joy Boy was the first pirate who openly rebelled against the institution known as the World Government.

Joy Boy has been confirmed to have the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit that made his body stretchy. Additionally, his Haki was incredibly powerful. This was evident from the incident when Emet released Joy Boy's sealed Haki, which knocked out almost all the Marines on Egghead Island and sent four of the Five Elders back to Marijoa. It is hard to imagine anyone else in One Piece achieving a similar feat. However, by the end of the series, Luffy will most likely be in the same bracket as Joy Boy.
