This article contains potential spoilers for the end of One Piece.
One Piece is a series that is famous for its incredible world-building, which sets the perfect stage for fans to make incredible and bizarre theories that often end up being true. For example, the one that was confirmed most recently was first teased many years ago, which stated that the Yonko Blackbeard is the son of the most infamous pirate of all time; the legendary Rocks D. Xebec.
This was theorized back when Rocks himself was first mentioned in Chapter 957, and only in Chapter 1154 of the One Piece manga was it confirmed. It's said that Rocks met his end in the God Valley Incident after taking on the might of Gol D. Roger and Monkey D. Garp together, though many believe that he is somehow still alive. Not only that, but it's possible that he lives on inside of Blackbeard, so let's see how this can be the case.

Ever since his very first appearance in the story many years ago, Blackbeard has consistently been raising eyebrows. This is because there is a lot of mystery to the man, which was first teased when Luffy and Zoro referred to him as 'they' instead of 'him' in their very first meeting with the villain. While fans initially brushed this off, the doubts returned during the closing moments of the Marineford War, where he became the only person in history to wield two Devil Fruits at the same time.
This spawned a plethora of theories about how this could be possible, ranging from Blackbeard being multiple people within one body to him even being a mysterious deity of some kind. Fans have always been debating what the truth of this character could be, but it seems that Loki's flashback during the Elbaf arc may have confirmed what Blackbeard is all about, and it all ties back to his father, Rocks D. Xebec.
One Piece: Who Will Have The Highest Bounty At The End Of The Series?
Bounties in One Piece are typically synonymous with the strength and infamy of a pirate, so let's look at whose will be the highest at the end!
Rocks Is Still Alive Because His Soul Lives Within Blackbeard's Strange Body
The Greatest Pirate Of All Time
- Rocks is likely still alive within Blackbeard's body.
Although it has only been a few chapters since it started, many are already calling Loki's flashback during the Elbaf arc one of the best in the entirety of One Piece. Not only has this given a great amount of context behind Loki's condition and the state of Elbaf, but it has also unveiled some of the biggest mysteries of the world and answered some of the fans' most burning questions.
The best of these reveals was the first official look at the legendary Rocks D. Xebec and the subsequent exploits of him and his crew, which confirmed that although he never had the title, Rocks was considered by everyone who knew of him to be the first Pirate King in all but name. Despite finally showing this legend a full 6 years after his first mention, there were many more questions that popped up with this, namely his entire ordeal when it came to Imu and his interest in specific Devil Fruits.
As I was sayin', there's two Devil Fruits I'm after. On of 'em's most likely on Elbaf!
Although the entire world believes him to be dead, there is a high possibility that Rocks may not have met his end in the God Valley Incident, and the reason why lies with the legendary Ope Ope no Mi Devil Fruit. In Chapter 1156, it is revealed that Rocks was after two specific Devil Fruits, one of which is the mysterious legendary fruit of Elbaf that Loki ended up eating. The other is a complete mystery, but fans believe it to be none other than the Ope Ope no Mi, since Rocks' first official appearance showed him making a hand sign identical to Law's 'Shambles'.
This would also check out with the notoriety of the fruit, since it's heavily implied that Imu underwent the Perennial Youth Operation in the Void Century through its use, granting them immortality. A common theory is that the fruit is what is used to give the 5 Elders immortality as well, which is why the World Government has always wanted it within its grasp.
However, at one point, the fruit escaped from their clutches before Law ate it, which is why the World Government was willing to pay 5 Billion Berries to get it back, which is one of the highest bounties in all of One Piece alongside Whitebeard and Roger's own. When Doflamingo first mentioned the unique properties of the Ope Ope no Mi, he explained that, along with the immortality operation, it also has the ability to shift souls into different bodies, which Law even showed on the Straw Hats during the Punk Hazard arc. So, ultimately, the theory explains that, before being defeated on God Valley, Rocks managed to place his soul into Blackbeard's body using the fruit.
This could be the best explanation for many things, mainly the biggest mystery behind Blackbeard, which is his ability to use multiple Devil Fruits. With one half using the Yami Yami no Mi, the other could use his Gura Gura no Mi at the same time. In Marineford, Marco explained that Blackbeard's body is different from other people in an attempt to explain how he could use multiple fruits, and this would perfectly explain how.
It would be impossible for a normal human. But you should all know that Teach is a little different! The very structure of his body... Is strange! Is that how he pulled this off?
Moreover, another of Blackbeard's biggest mysteries is the fact that he never sleeps, which has been mentioned many times in the series. Although it has never been outright confirmed, Rocks being a part of him would explain this as well, as one half of Blackbeard could rest while the other is awake. If this was done when Blackbeard was a child, it explains Shanks and Buggy's mistrust of him during the fight in Oden's flashback.
Finally, this theory also explains the reason why Blackbeard will be the greatest and final villain of the entire story. Upon breaking into the Chamber of Flowers, Rocks promised Imu that he would return, and doing so in Blackbeard's body to defeat the villain would be the perfect means of doing so. This would also be a great thematic connection, since all of Teach's strength comes from Devil Fruits, and he has never been a notable Haki user, despite being one of the setting's most important individuals.
One Piece: Rocks D. Xebec's Ambitions For Elbaf Make Perfect Sense With The Nika Fruit
Chapter 1145 revealed that Rocks once visited Elbaf, and this theory perfectly explains why he visited this fabled island!
Rocks' soul within his body could fill in this gap, as these two halves would come together to create the strongest villain in the entire story, who has the most powerful Devil Fruit powers and Haki concurrently. This explains how he was able to scar Shanks long before he had any Devil Fruit, since the Haki of Rocks would have come into play when the two fought all that time ago, since even Shanks admits that he wasn't taken off-guard and the fight was fair. Only through Rocks' strength and his mastery of Haki could Blackbeard damage Shanks before he had any Devil Fruit.
