Oda has officially confirmed Whitebeard to be the strongest Yonko that the story has shown so far. Whitebeard was once a part of the Rocks Pirates, just like some other Yonko and after the fall of Rocks on God Valley, he made his own pirate crew. Whitebeard continued to grow in terms of power, and eventually, he went on to rival even Roger.

It said that Gol D. Roger and Whitebeard were exactly equal in terms of power and that's what makes Whitebeard the strongest Yonko. It must also be noted that all the other Yonko are said to specifically be competing with Whitebeard in a power struggle, which shows that he was the biggest and most important of them all.

Shanks Is The Current Strongest Yonko
After Whitebeard's Death, Shanks Became The Strongest
While Whitebeard was the strongest at one point, he is now officially dead. However, there are others in the ranks of the Yonko who possess tremendous power. At the moment, it can be said that Shanks is the strongest of the Yonko in One Piece.
He has some of the most formidable Haki ever seen in One Piece, and on top of that, he also inherited the technique of Rocks and Roger. Shanks is, by far, the strongest at the moment, with Blackbeard right behind him, along with Luffy. It goes without saying that Buggy is incredibly weak and not truly a Yonko level fighter, but his reputation carries him.
