This post contains spoilers for One Piece.
Edward Newgate, better known as Whitebeard, was one of the original Yonko in One Piece. He was introduced before the timeskip, and he heavily featured in the Marineford arc.
Whitebeard went to the Marine Headquarters to rescue Portgas D. Ace. The Yonko was renowned for being extremely overprotective of his crewmates, which is why no One Piece pirate dared to harm them. Whitebeard put up a great fight against the Marines, but ultimately, he ended up losing. However, he was immortalized in history because he didn't try to run away even once.

Whitebeard Ran Away From Garp In Chapter 1161
Fans Think That Whitebeard's Legacy Has Been Negatively Affected
- Garp attacked the Rocks Pirates
- Whitebeard chose to run away
One Piece Chapter 1161 was outstanding, but at the same time, it was rather polarizing. In the chapter, fans saw Monkey D. Garp in action. For ages, fans wanted to know how strong prime Garp was, and it seems that they are about to get their answer soon. In the chapter, Linlin attacked Garp with his homies, but the vice admiral was hardly damaged.
You call that fire, Linlin? —Garp
Subsequently, Garp launched a counterattack against the pirates. He used his immense power, but Whitebeard, Linlin, and Kaido ran away. At first glance, it seems that the trio was scared of Garp, but that's not the case. Kaido was disappointed by the choice because he wanted to fight Garp. So, the young pirate was not afraid of him. Also, the trio ran away because they had to provide backup to their captain, Xebec. All three were aware of Garp's strength and knew it would be extremely difficult to subdue him in a short period of time. If they stayed, Xebec would be outnumbered. So, the three decided to head to run away.
Following the incident, a lot of fans began to question whether Whitebeard was as strong as Roger and Garp. The incident has also been used to downplay Whitebeard's legacy of never running away from battle. However, none of these claims make sense. As previously stated, Whitebeard did not run away from Garp because he was scared. His goal was to go after Xebec.
If Whitebeard wanted, he could have easily stayed behind and fought off Garp. Also, Whitebeard was still Roger's greatest rival. The two fought many times, with neither of them being able to overpower the other. This is further accentuated by the slight difference in their bounties. Roger was the Pirate King, and his bounty was only slightly higher. All these things clearly point to Whitebeard being equal to Roger.
Whitebeard Was The Strongest Man In One Piece
Whitebeard's Power Was Unmatched
Now that it's clear Oda did not taint Whitebeard's legacy, it is worth remembering that the pirate was on a different level from most. Whitebeard may have been a Yonko, but he was much stronger than his peers. For starters, Whitebeard had the Gura Gura no Mi, a Devil Fruit said to have enough power to destroy the world. With its power, he could create destructive tremors that could effortlessly wipe out an entire island. Despite having such a potent Devil Fruit, Whitebeard did not rely on it alone. He learned and mastered all three types of Haki.
Fans have already seen many times that Whitebeard's Haki was just as good as Roger's, if not better. Last but not least, Whitebeard's big frame gave him the physical edge against most opponents. While Whitebeard did not show off his strength, his opponents and allies knew what he was about.
Gol D. Roger respected Whitebeard the most, and they even shared drinks multiple times. Roger even told him about the One Piece and other secrets. When Roger finally died, Shiki told Whitebeard that he could rule over the world. Last but not least, Garp called Whitebeard "The King of the Seas." Garp knew Whitebeard's true power and what he was capable of. So, Eiichiro Oda has given readers more than enough proof of just how strong Whitebeard was.
