It’s hard to keep a long series exciting for fans, but Oda has managed to do just that with tons of intriguing things, and Gear 5 is one of them. Oda created Luffy’s Gear 5 in Wano, and he has revealed why.

Oda Reveals to Fans Why He Created Luffy’s Gear 5

Oda Wanted Something Silly In The Manga

Gear 5 is currently the strongest form of Luffy, which he unlocked in the One Piece manga during his fight against one of the fearsome Yonko, Kaido, the Captain of the Beast Pirates.

This form, while beloved by most fans, of course, has some haters. Some people thought the form was too silly, or that it wasn’t cool enough for Luffy to have. Eiichiro Oda, however, has revealed that he personally doesn’t care whether people like this new form or not, and that he wanted it exactly this way. Oda believes that a lot of fun and silliness has been lost from manga series, with many choosing more stoic or edgy story additions. Oda definitely doesn't want this. Here’s what he had to say about this exactly:

“I drew this because I really want to have fun, and I think that it’s okay if people don't like it. I just want to play around with my battles. Since I was an assistant, I have felt that silly expressions that were so characteristic in manga have been gradually lost. Putting a light bulb in a character’s head when they come up with some idea, or making the character’s legs go in circles when they’re running, for example.” — Eiichiro Oda

Luffy’s Gear 5 is definitely a breath of fresh air when it comes to anime transformations, especially in the shonen world. It makes even more sense when it only serves to elevate Luffy’s personality. Luffy was never an edgy character, so fans disappointed that his ultimate form would match who he is as a character is definitely odd. Luffy’s Gear 5 fits him perfectly, and the majority of fans definitely agree as it has become one of the most popular anime transformations of all time.

Will Luffy Get A Stronger Form Than Gear 5?

It’s a Possibility

One Piece Gear 5 Luffy Egghead-4

As previously stated, right now, Gear 5 is Luffy’s strongest form. However, this form was enough to take on Kaido, a Yonko. That said, it might not be enough for the threats to come. The Final Saga of One Piece is filled with enemies that will make Kaido look like a cakewalk, so while Luffy might not get another form, he will definitely need more mastery over Gear 5 and Haki.
